  1. Figure 12.1: The cell cycle. The cell cycle includes interphase (G 1 , S, and G 2 ) and M phase (mitosis and cytokinesis). The time required for each stage varies with cell type and species. Most cells spend about 90 percent of their cell cycle in interphase.
