8. - The Sailendra dynasty ruled an agricultural kingdom on the island of Java. - The Sailendra dynasty was taken over by the Srivijaya empire. They peaked between the 7 th and 13 th centuries, and ruled the Strait of Malacca and other waters around the islands of Sumatra, Borneo and Java. - The Srivijaya gained their power by taxing the trade that passed through its waters. - The capital Palembang, or Sumatra became a great center of Buddhist learning where Chinese monks could study as an alternative to traveling to India. 10. KOREAN DYNASTIES The Korean state was founded by a legendary hero named Tan’gun, whose father was a god and the mother was a bear. Another legend says the state was founded by the Chinese Shang Dynasty. These legends show how Koreans were highly influenced by Chinese cultures. Although Koreans created their own traditions, they also adapted the Chinese cultures, blending it in to the Korean native traditions. MT
