3. Important Dates in the History of Skiing
Though the oldest records of skiing on snow date to nearly 5,000 years ago,
the history of the modern sport began in Scandinavia. Records show that
hunters and farmers in this area used cross-country ski equipment well
before the 17th century, at which time the military adopted the practice as
a way of getting across difficult terrain. By the 1800s, advancements in
equipment had made downhill skiing a possibility.

The first downhill ski competition on record happened in 1866 in Christiania,
Norway. By 1882, the first ski club had opened in the United States, and less
than 20 years later, the National Ski Association came into being. Ski
jumping and cross country skiing became Olympic events in 1932 and
alpine skiing appeared at the next games in 1936 in Germany. After these
games, skiing and ski vacations became widely popular across the world
and remain so to the present day.
