Nebosh National General Certificate (No Date)
1. National Examination Board for Occupational Safety and Health
NEBOSH National General Certificate
Introduction
The NEBOSH National General Certificate gives a good foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors
and staff with health and safety among their day to day responsibilities. This qualification is widely taken as a first
step towards a career in health and safety and is accepted by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health
(IOSH) in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH).
What are the benefits for employers?
Many organisations choose the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a key part of their supervisors or
management development programme. By ensuring that line managers have a sound understanding of the
principles of risk management, they build an effective safety culture in the company. Smaller companies, operating
in lower risk environments, often choose NEBOSH National General Certificate as the appropriate qualification for
the manager taking the lead on health and safety issues.
What does the qualification cover?
The NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK,
identification and control of workplace hazards and the practical application of this knowledge. The syllabus is
mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO. No previous health and
safety knowledge is required but candidates should note that the assessment includes a requirement to write a
short report.
The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
• Management of Health and Safety (NGC1) (2hr written exam included)
• Controlling workplace hazards (NGC2) (2hr written exam included)
• Health and Safety practical application (NGC3) (2hr practical assessment included)
Who is the qualification for?
Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and
safety issues. The certificate helps manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General
Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview and is a sound basis for
further professional study.
