Whole Foods Foundation, PACT & Indiegogo create 100 Urban Gardens
In some ways crowdfunding is not new…
Most people recognize the statue of liberty and know that it was a gift from France
What they don’t know is that the “base” for the statue was not included in the gift.
A passionate citizen led the charge to mobilize other citizens to raise the $100,000 needed.
That citizen was Pulitzer and he was able to use his newspaper to spread the word and ask for support.
The story has a nice ending in that they did raise the $100,000. And the average gift amount was 89cents. Thousands of citizens pulled together to be part of something bigger than themselves and to take pride in making this effort happen.

Who is doing CF?--- All different types of people…all over the world
We’re going to go a lot more into this in future sessions…
Show must go on….Fantastic ngo baycat based in bay area teaching youth in worse area incredibly valuable media skills
Computers stolen…SF foundation put up $50k but didn’t have funding in budget for full amount.
Villy was able to multiply that and raise $51k.
Indiegogo is the worlds largest open global crowdfunding platform!!
We were first. When we started in 2008, there was no crowdfunding…now there are 500+ niche sites out there.
Millions of dollars flow through Indiegogo every week.
What makes Igg different?
-Totally open- Anyone anywhere can raise money for anything. Other sites like Kickstarter are only for creative projects AND you need to apply. Indiegogo is about the democratization of fundraising. Anyone can do it. Any project you pick can be successful.
Global—always been global..campaigns in every country and donors in every country. …now in pounds and Euro’s as well. Hult is International school…want global partner.
Keep what you raise- Other platforms like Kickstarter are all or nothing. Over 50% of campaigns walk away with nothing. On Indiegogo you can keep what you raise. This is especially important for early stage social entrepreneurs and non profits.
Incredible focus on Customer Happiness…whole department responding to inquiries 7 days a week within 24hrs but often within a couple hours. Happiness supports campaigners as well as contributors.
Great team in general- Many of you met Amy Lesnick when she was out here in December. Amy is Indiegogo’s head of Social Innovation and has a great background as the former CEO of Full Circle Fund- a venture philanthropy organization, an instructor at Berkeley Haas School of Biz, and an advisor at Stanford’s accelerator.
- Indiegogo’s partner page functionality is also uniquely suited to meet needs of Hult enabling us to create our own space where we’ll showcase all of the student campaigns
Crowdfunding overall is growing exponentially each month. Networks and programs like Energy Access Practicioners network are playing important roles in enabling their members to showcase their community’s campaigns and to build the eco-system around these social innovators to ensure their success.
Indiegogo is partnering with the UN Foundation/Energy access practitioners network to showcase your campaigns. We’re going to have a 2nd webinar on how this works as well as go into more detail on how to be effective in CF in Feb.
