- 3. Who else works at Zahnow Library? Student workers We’ll be using Research Assistants this fall– who will eventually be working with freshmen students on their research questions at the Writing Studio and staffing our research center desk at other times
- 4. How many questions are asked at the research center? 2100+ from chat. Information/direction Reference questions Research help Machinery questions/software questions Log ins (guests)
- 5. What are the library’s open hours? Hours change from September to May (school year) Certain times of the day and semester are quite busy. Might be noisy. Might be difficult to get access to a computer or a librarian.
- 6. Does anyone use the library anymore? Library use is up – Students use our space extensively for study and socializing Nature of the questions has changed. People still need help – just in a different way.
- 7. As a member of OLLI, what services are available to me? Username & password available for access to computers on campus – see Jo Brownlie for details. Special access: talk to Thom Z-- checking out the “non-feature” films, access to archival material Library interloan: must be handled through your local public library Overdue fines : 10 cents per day per item (books); 50 cents per day (Music/Audio CDs, DVDs/Video tape)
- 8. Can I read online articles at home? Yes, but mostly through the MeL databases. Lots of databases at SVSU, but not accessible to the public except on campus -- License issue. Ask if they know what I’m talking about when I say “databases” Many resources through MeL– MeLCat, MeL databases MeL Michigana E-books (also available through the public library) “what to read next” types of tools Newspapers

- 9. How is research in a university library different today than from when I was a student? Ask: What do you think of when you think of a library? Losing resemblance to libraries of the past. Students are using libraries as a collaborative study space and also for individual study Brief talk on how libraries were all about books and print; Collecting things “just in case” Now, we are moving to a model of purchase and subscribe to items “just in time” going to the reference desk to ask a librarian a question – still happens, but the type of question has changed; we roam the stacks occasionally – going to the user rather than waiting Lots of “weeding,” of print books, print periodicals Asked to demonstrate “value” – in numbers, impact, benefits – quantitative & qualitative research, assessment –- is what we are doing having an impact on student learning and retention

Services: roving: going outside of the library confines Working more with faculty to support their course or personal research needs Using student workers more – Peer Research Assistants – starting in the fall.
