Things to Think About…
40 Generic Principles of Classroom Management
– What is the single most important influence on the classroom learning environment?
– What range of professional responsibilities do teachers need to accept in the classroom?
– What ideas and strategies must teachers develop if they are to have a classroom that is
characterized by a high level of on-task student behaviour?
– If students are to display appropriate behaviour in class, what preplanning is necessary for
teachers?
– A problem exists whenever a behaviour interferes with the teaching act, interferes with
the rights of others to learn, is psychologically of physically unsafe, or destroys property.
– For effective teaching to take place, teachers must be competent in managing student
misbehaviour so as to maximize the time spent on learning.
– Teachers who manage their classrooms effectively enjoy teaching more and have greater
confidence in their ability to affect student achievement.
– An awareness of the causes of misbehaviour enables teachers to use positive control
techniques rather than negative techniques, which stem from erroneously viewing
misbehaviour as a personal affront.
– Basic human needs such as food, safety, belonging and security are prerequisites for
appropriate classroom behaviour.
– The need for a sense of significance, competence, virtue, and power influences student
behaviour.
– ……………………..See our Google Site for the remaining principles
…regarding Classroom Management
Reflecting on our Adolescence:
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
What was your adolescence
like?
What was the good, the
bad, and the ugly of these
years for you?
Think of the following
questions:
Remembering your Grade 8 Experience
• Your Geography: Where did you live? What school did you go to?
• Your Free Time: How did you spend your free time? After
school? Weekends? Who was your best friend? Who was in your
gang? What did you talk to your best friend about? What did
you not talk about? What were you sure of? What were you
confused about?
• Your School Time: What was your favourite class in school?
Why? Who was your favourite teacher in the school? Why?
What was the best thing about school? What was the worst
thing about school? Did you play sports? Did you have a
girlfriend/boyfriend? What adjective would you use to describe
your grade 8 year? What was something pleasant you remember?
• Your Learning: How did you learn best? How were you taught?
How did you behave? How were you disciplined? How were your
classes managed? What were the positive consequences of
behaving well? What were the negative consequences of
behaving poorly?
The Final Word….
