10. So you’re teaching in a new age
Everything fast change
Try to give ‘em what they need
Learn a high tech technique
Try it out next week
To help the kid that doesn’t read
But you’re teaching in an old class
It’s too hot, a tough task
Feelin’ like you can’t compete
With the TV, computer tower
Calculator, solar power
How you gonna make ‘em think?
You got kids on the internet
World wide web head
Everything under the sun
They’re talkin’ on a cell phone
Call waiting, dial tone
New ways to get work done
Send a fax, grab some fast food
Hypermart, drive thru
Program their VCR
They play with toys that can do it all
Shop at home or in the mall
And that’s just the way things are.
These kids don’t want to memorize
They hate the mental exercise
Unless they think it can relate
Regurgitate a list of names
Famous men, heroic dames
But how does it affect their fate?
They wanna know what’s comin’ up
What happens when they are adults
The farmer, lawyer and the clerk
The knowledge that they want real fast
Is in the future not the past
Competing in the world of work
But they still need to socialize
Still need to realize
Communication is the key
They need the skills to work together
Solve problems, make a better world
For the grand kids of you and me
If you’re teaching to the whole child
The happy, sad, the hog wild
The hero and the sinking ship
They learn from hard work,
Big dreams, good hearts, honesty
The value of relationships.
So you’re teaching on a new page
Riding on a fast wave
It’s tougher each and every day
There are some kids with too much stuff
Others never had enough
You try to meet their needs
In innovative new ways
But the work you do is so important
Every single school mornin’
For the future in their reach
You deserve respect and admiration
For the work in your profession
Because you teach.
