4. Microwave Oven
It was invented by Percy LeBaron Spencer in 1946. Percy was testing the
invention of a magnetron (a new vacuum tube) and he discovered that the candy
bar he had in his pocket had melted. He experimented with popcorn by the tube
and it popped. This started the idea that quot;if a candy bar can be melted and
popcorn can be popped that quickly, then why couldn't other foods?quot; Building
off of this, he build the first microwave that was a metal box with an opening into
which he fed microwave power.
The first microwave was 6 feet tall, 750 pounds, and $5,000.
