Biblissima's prototype viewer. Demonstration and manipulation

  1. 1. Biblissima’s prototype viewer Demonstration and manipulation Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  2. 2. I. Technological environment data model, IIIF specifications, technology stack Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  3. 3. Shared Canvas Shared data model to describe digital facsimiles of physical objects... ...and every digital content resources that might be associated with it (text transcription, detailed image, sound…) Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  4. 4. IIIF Specifications (Image API) Current spec: http://iiif.io/api/image/1.1/ ● defines standard URI syntax (request parameters): {identifier}/{region}/{size}/{quality}.{format} http://iiif.io/#try-it => repositories can deliver images in the same way (same image requests) Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  5. 5. IIIF Specifications (Metadata API) Current spec: http://iiif.io/api/metadata/1.0 ● provides the information necessary for a viewer to display a digital object ● leverages the Shared Canvas data model => repositories can deliver structural and descriptive metadata about a digitized object in a standard manner Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  6. 6. Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  7. 7. What is a Shared Canvas “manifest”? It’s like a ship manifest… Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  8. 8. What is a Shared Canvas “manifest”? … intended for medieval manuscripts or any kind of digital surrogates of physical objects (mainly text-bearing objects). Declares everything is on board: ● basic metadata about the physical object ● sequence(s) of digital images ● associated content resources (text transcription/translation, detailed images, audio, comments...) ● internal structure of the document (i.e. aggregations of resources like layers or ranges) ● etc... Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  9. 9. What is a Shared Canvas “manifest”? Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014) A simple hierarchical structure of types of resources, specified in the IIIF Metadata API, based on the Shared Canvas classes and properties
  10. 10. What is a Shared Canvas “manifest”? A file serialized as JSON-LD (RDF) => a format better suited for Javascript-based application like Mirador A few sample files from Biblissima data : http://doc.biblissima-condorcet.fr/demos-iiif Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  11. 11. Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014) Demo environment at Biblissima (04.2014) ● image stacks with sample documents from Gallica, BVMM and BVH ● IIIF image server up and running (Loris) ● XSL stylesheets to build manifest files from various input formats (EAD, OAI, TEI) ● Mirador instance up and running
  12. 12. II. Mirador viewer Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  13. 13. Mirador viewer ● web application being developed at Stanford University: http://iiif.io/mirador/ ● multi-window image viewing and comparison workspace ● prototype demonstrating cross-repository image viewing via IIIF protocol Please no more slides… A LIVE DEMO NOW! Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  14. 14. Mirador demo at Biblissima http://demos.biblissima-condorcet.fr/mirador General overview of Mirador (in French) : http://doc.biblissima-condorcet. fr/visualiseur-mirador Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  15. 15. III. The Biblissima case studies http://demos.biblissima-condorcet.fr/iiif/case-studies Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  16. 16. Technical goals ● implement IIIF for demo purposes based on different use cases ● test and compare image clients and servers ● build manifests out of different metadata input formats (EAD, OAI, TEI) coming from the Biblissima image repositories Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  17. 17. Library of Charles V ● virtual reconstruction of the “Librairie royale” at the time of Charles V and Charles VI ● 3 sample manuscripts from Gallica (2 from BnF, 1 from Besançon) => inspect and compare hands of copists, iconography, texts Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  18. 18. “Florus dispersus” ● scattered manuscript in 3 parts (dated 8th-9th c.) containing “Epîtres” and “Sermons” by Saint Augustine ; annotated by Florus of Lyon in the first half of 9th c. ● 1 part from Gallica (BnF), 2 other parts from e-codices (Geneva, St- Petersburg) => display the 3 fragments in the same interface (images are remotley called from e-codices servers via IIIF) (work in progress : IIIF endpoint at e-codices is not yet publicly available) Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
  19. 19. Roman du Mont Saint-Michel ● work by Guillaume de Saint-Pair (12th c.) ● 1 manuscript from the British Library (Add MS 10289) ● text transcription in TEI from the University of Caen: http://www. unicaen.fr/services/puc/sources/gsp => display images and text side by side (images are remotley called from BL servers via IIIF) (work in progress : automatic text/image alignment for the whole work) Régis Robineau - Pool Biblissima. Training School COST-IRHT (02.04.2014)
