Outside-In: A Community-Driven Approach To Innovation
1. A sense of place.
If someone in your organization has the term “Community”
somewhere in their title? (EX: Community Manager)
You are delivering programs or engaging stakeholders beyond
the borders of your local geographic area/zip code?
You have a facebook account?
You have cancelled your facebook account?
You have an iphone or other smart phone device?

34. Guiding Principles:
‣ 1. CDI is not about tools. It is a different way of looking at -- and approaching communication,
innovation and collaboration.
‣ 2. Mileage may vary. Distinguish between the personal and institutional stance toward social
media and open approaches to innovation, and then learn if it meets any intrinsic needs of your
own.
‣ 3. It’s not about the number of followers or friends. It is about quality. The quality of the fiber
you develop to bind the relationships in your network, and the quality of interactions by the
people working towards a common goal.
‣ 4. You can stumble if you’re humble. You can make mistakes, accept correction, do better next
time, and, in the process, achieve your goals...as long as you do it in plain view.
‣ 5. Invest time and resources in getting alignment between your organization and the interests of
your key stakeholders.
‣ 6. The field is advancing rapidly, in response to whatever people want to do, trivial or profound.
Find alignment with key stakeholders first, then go do something to change the world!
