Chamomile Uses

What is Chamomile?

Chamomile is one of the best known herbs and is actually two different plants. German
chamomile and Roman chamomile. Both plants have Daisy like blossoms, feathery foliage, and
they pleasant apple fragrance and flavor.

                                                                                     1/4
Although they share a name and a fragrance, they are different. German chamomile sometimes
referred to as mayweed is an annual which can grow to be 2 to 3 feet tall.

Roman chamomile is a perennial that seldom grows more than 9 inches high and has a stronger
fragrance than it’s German counterpart.

What is Chamomile used for?
Since ancient Egyptian times chamomile was used to cure malarial chills that plagued the
ancient civilization. The fresh delicate fragrance was popular in medieval England for
strewing. Strewing herbs was a common way to freshen the air in homes were bathing was
uncommon. In Spain chamomiles were used to flavor a very fine sherry.

Many herbalists believe that if the key is used over a long period time, beneficial effects
may accumulate.

Chamomile tea

                                                                                                    2/4
Chamomile tea is mildly sedative but it also helps to improve the appetite and cleanse the
blood.

Use 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers for every 2 1/2 cups of boiling water. Allow to
infuse for 5 min.

Chamomile lawn
I have to admit I really love this idea for a lawn of chamomile. It is not unusual to find entire
lawns of the sweet scented herb in England. The Roman variety is best suited to this. Check
with your local garden center to find out if this is a good idea to try for your climate.

Plants should be placed 6 inches apart and watered frequently until the gaps are filled in the
first two cutting should be done with hand shears. A long more set on a high setting to
prevent blooming can be used after that.
