3. A Research Question is a statement that
identifies the topic to be studied. There are six
(6) types of Researchable Questions:

4. KNOWLEDGE QUESTIONS
Knowledge questions recall specific
information.
These questions often start with

what, when, list, describe,
name, & define
5. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS
Comprehension questions often ask the reader
to interpret, explain and summarize or tell the
writer to do the same.

interpret, summarize, state in your
own words, explain, give examples, &
predict
6. APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Application questions often ask you about ways
to do something.
These questions often start with or contain

compute, solve, apply, modify,
construct, & predict
7. ANALYSIS QUESTIONS
Analysis questions ask the reader and/or writer
to think about something as a whole and the
relationship of its’ parts.

be made about…?
8. SYNTHESIS QUESTIONS
Synthesis questions include putting parts
together in a new way, developing a plan, saying
something in a new way.

9. EVALUATION QUESTIONS
Evaluation questions ask for a person to make a
judgment.
These questions often start with or contain

What judgments can you make
about…?, How would you compare
to…?
10. What are Topic Sentence?
What is the topic sentence?
The topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph. What does it do?
It introduces the main idea of the paragraph.
How do I write one?
Summarize the main idea of your paragraph. Indicate to the reader what
your paragraph will be about.
Example:
There are three reasons why Canada is one of the best countries in the
world. First, Canada has an excellent health care system. All Canadians have
access to medical services at a reasonable price. Second, Canada has a high
standard of education. Students are taught by well-trained teachers and are
encouraged to continue studying at university. Finally, Canada's cities are
clean and efficiently managed. Canadian cities have many parks and lots of
space for people to live. As a result, Canada is a desirable place to live.
11. A "citation" is the way you tell your readers that certain material in
your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the
information necessary to find that source again, including:
– information about the author
– the title of the work
– the name and location of the company that published your copy
of the source
– the date your copy was published
– the page numbers of the material you are borrowing
