The Golden Eggs
Long time ago in a remote village, in central China, was inhabited mainly
with farmers and haunters.
One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to
God, for help or his family would die of starvation.
Few days later, and old man, with long grey beard, passed by his house and
took pity on him. He gave him a goose and said, “I don’t have any expensive thing
to give you and hope this goose win help you ease your hardship”.
A week later to his greatest surprise the farmer found an egg in his yard.
This was not ordinary egg. It was a golden egg. He was overjoyed to this miracle.
Thereafter, the livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten
his earlier hardship. He became lazy, arrogant and spendthrift.
Strangely, the goose only laid one golden egg every six months. The greedy
farmer lost his patience and slaughtered his goose thinking there were plenty of
golden eggs inside its stomach.
Though he very much regretted for his foolishness but it’s already too late
finally, the greedy farmer went back to his poor life.

Snow White
Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Snow White. She lived with

Snow White”.
Doc, one of the dwarfs, said, “If you wish, you may live here with us.”
Snow White said, “Oh could i? Thank you.” Then Snow White told the dwarfs the
whole story and Snow White and the seven dwarfs happily ever after.

The Deer and The Crocodile
One day, a deer found a crocodile stuck in a quicksand. The crocodile could
not even move an inch. The deer decided to help the crocodile. With all its strength,
the deer pulled the crocodile out of the quicksand.
As soon as the crocodile was out, it opened its mouth wide to eat the deer.
“Wait!” shouted the deer, “I saved you. How can you eat me? It is not fair.” “I am

The fox said to the deer, “Look at this ungrateful crocodile. Now, let’s just
leave him here!”
Then soon after saying goodbye to the crocodile, the fox and the deer left
happily, leaving the foolish crocodile stuck in the mud.

MOUNT KINABALU
Long ago on the top of Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, there lived a dragon. He
owned a large and beautiful pearl. People believed that he controlled the weather
with it.
The emperor of china heard this and wanted the pearl. He sent his two sons,
Wee Ping and Wee San to Borneo to steal it. The princes together with one hundred
soldiers, set sail for Borneo in twelve sailing junks.
When they arrived in Borneo, they set out immediately to find the most
mountains. Their journey up the rugged slopes of Mount Kinabalu proved very
difficult. The dragon guarded his cave very fiercely and killed many of their
soldiers.
Then Wee San had a clever idea. He climbed a tall tree, so he could see the
dragon’s cave. He noted what time the dragon left his cave to hunt for food and
what time he returned to it.
Next he ordered his men to make a fake pearl and a large kite. He waited
until the dragon left his cave. Then he placed the fake pearl in a bag, slung it across
his shoulder and flew up to the mountain top on the kite. He exchanged the real
pearl for the fake one and then his brother pulled his kite back to the ground. The
brothers quickly returned to their ships and set sail for china. They sailed safety
home. The emperor was thrilled with the pearl and gave a big party to celebrate his
son’s return.

BATARA KALA
It is good to know some of the folktales that our country has. Here is one of
the legends that are commonly told in java.
People in some villages in Java believe that an eclipse happens when the
sun or the moon is swallowed by Batara Kala, the evil giant. Although Batara Kala
is not one of the gods in heaven, he is very powerful.
One day Batara Wisnu (god the protector) distributed the Tirta Amerta Sari
or the drink of the gods. Anyone who drank it would never die. Batara Kala wanted
to have some, too, so he tried to cheat by changing himself to form of a god. Batara
Surya (the sun god) and Batari Chandra (the moon goddess), however, knew of this
trick and told Batara Wisnu about it. When Batara Kala’s turn came to receive the
drink, Batara Wisnu shot him from a distance with his famous weapon, the chakra
and it cut his head off. Some of drink, however, soiled over Batara Kala’s head, and
this made his head live forever. From then on, Batara Kala continued to live
without his body.
Batara Kala was very angry with Batara Surya and Batari Chandra
and tried to swallow them, but the god and the goddess escaped. Batara
Kala got angrier and from that time on he never stopped chasing them,
Batara Wisnu wanted to protect the gods and goddesses. He ordered the
people on earth to make a lot of noise whenever there was on eclipse.
The noise would help Batara Surya and Batari Chandra to escape from
Batara Kala’s throat.
To this day people beat objects like rice grinders when they see an
eclipse. They stay in their houses pregnant women are told to hide under
their beds in order top avoid Batara Kala’s anger.

THE TRISTY CROW
One hot day, a thirsty crow flew all over the fields looking for water. For a
long time, she could not find any. She felt very weak, almost giving up hope.
Suddenly, she saw a water jug below her. She flew straight down to see if
there was any water inside. Yes, she could see some water inside the jug!
The crow tried to push her head into the jug. Sadly she found that the neck
of the jug was too narrow. Then she tried to push the jug down for the water to flow

MALIN KUNDANG
Long time ago, in west Sumatra, there lived a poor widow named Mande
Rubiah. She lived with her son named Malin Kundang. She loved her son very
much. When Malin was fifteen years old, he worked as a porter on a merchant ship
and went abroad for many years.
The captain of the ship liked Malin Kundang. When he was older, the
captain asked him to marry his daughter. Malin Kundang becomes very rich. But,
he becomes too proud and arrogant because of his wealth.
One day, Malin Kundang’s ship dropped anchor at Batang Arau Harbour,
west Sumatra. Malin’s mother heard about this and went to the ship to see her son.
Bit what happened? , Malin Kundang did not want to admit his mother. He knew it
but he was too arrogant. He even scolded her and asked the guard to send her away.
After that, Malin’s mother prayed to God. “Oh God, I know he is my son. But, why
has she turned so wicked? Punish him as you wish!”

THE LION AND THE FOX
One day the lion, king of the jungle, told all the animals in the forest that he
was sick and dying. He told them to come visit him to hear his last words.
The goat, the sheep, and the cow went into the lion’s cave to say good bye
to their king. The fox which was very smart just waited outside and watched.
None of the animals came out. Finally, after a long time, the lion got up and
come out of his cave and saw the fox sitting there. The lion said to him, “why don’t
you come visit me, my friend? You know that I am sick and dying.”
The fox answered, “Pardon me, your majesty, but I did not wish to crowd
you. I saw many animals go into your cave, but none of them have come out. Until

TWO THIN GOATS
Once there were two goats. Both of them were hungry. They were tied
together with a brown rope. They wanted to eat the green leaves from two

SIGHT OF THE BLIND
Once upon a time, there was an old lady who was blind. Though she had
spent a lot of money on medicine, she could not get cured.
Then there came a doctor called Danbad who said who would cure her if
she gave him a large sum of money. She agreed to give him the money when she
was cured. So the doctor came everyday to treat her.
Actually the doctor was a thief. Everyday he took away something or other
belonging to the lady. First the boxes, then the chairs, then even the tables.
However he gave the lady good medicine and she was finally cured.
“Now, “said the doctor after curing the old lady, “give me my money”.
“I won’t,” said the lady.
Hear it, the doctor was angry and took her to the court.
In the court the lady told the judge, “I told the doctor I would pay him
when I could see well. But, I cannot see well. Before I was blind, I could see tables
and chairs and boxes in my house. Now I can see only bare well. So I am not
completely cured.”
Knowing the problem, the judge understands and smiled.
“Dr. Danbad” he said, “unless you can make the lady see all her furniture
and things see shall not pay you.
Finally, that night the doctor when the quietly put back all the things he had
taken from the lady’s house.

BAWANG MERAH AND BAWANG PUTIH
Bawang Putih was an orphan. She lived with her step mother and step
sister named Bawang Merah. Her step mother never let Bawang Merah work; all
works whether they were easy or not were done by Bawang Putih. Bawang Merah
was made herself up in front of the mirror all day along. However, see admitted
that Bawang Putih was more beautiful than her.
One of the works that had to be done by Bawang Putih was washing their
clothes in a small river. Luckily, she could finish it easily in a few times because
their was a wonderful fish in the river that used to help her.
Her step mother became curious. Then she asked Bawang Merah to spy
Bawang Putih when she was washing the clothes at the river. She knew at last that
there was a wonderful fish helping Bawang Putih. She caught the fish secretly. She
cooks it and then eat it together with her mother. They gave the bone and the head
of the fish to Bawang Putih and order her to eat it. Bawang Putih was sad because
her friend who used to help was died. She could not eat it. She buried the bone into
the ground. Amazingly, there grew a plant with beautiful flowers.
One day, there was a handsome prince came to their house and looked at
the flowers. He asked who had planted it. Bawang Merah told him that she did, but
the prince didn’t believe her. Finally, he told them that he was the fish that they
killed and eaten. He cursed Bawang Merah and her mother so that their skin was
like a fish. With those words, their skin changed and they run into the forest.
Finally, the prince asked Bawang Putih to marry with him and they lived happily
ever after in the palace.

CINDERELLA
Once upon a time there was a pretty young girl named Cinderella

her step-mother and step-sister were, Cinderella was always cheerful. Even little
animals loved to be near her. She made friends with mice and birds, making them
little outfits to wear, caring for them.
One day letter came. It invited everyone to the palace for a ball.
Cinderella’s step-mother said,” Cinderella may go, but only if she finishes her
work.” The step-sister went to the ball that night with their mother. Cinderella was
left alone. She cried because, she actually wanted to go to the ball too.

The next day, the prince and his Grand duke brought along the glass slipper.
They went all over the kingdom to search for the owner.
After searching for along time. Finally, they came to Cinderella’s house.
The slipper fit her. The prince was very happy to find Cinderella again. They got
married and lived happily ever after.

One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to God, for help or his family would die of starvation. Few days later, and old man, with long grey beard, passed by his house and took pity on him. He gave him a goose and said, “I don’t have any expensive thing to give you and hope this goose win help you ease your hardship”. A week later to his greatest surprise the farmer found an egg in his yard. This was not ordinary egg. It was a golden egg. He was overjoyed to this miracle. Thereafter, the livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten his earlier hardship. He became lazy, arrogant and spendthrift. Strangely, the goose only laid one golden egg every six months. The greedy farmer lost his patience and slaughtered his goose thinking there were plenty of golden eggs inside its stomach. Then he placed the fake pearl in a bag, slung it across his shoulder and flew up to the mountain top on the kite. He exchanged the real pearl for the fake one and then his brother pulled his kite back to the ground. The brothers quickly returned to their ships and set sail for china. They sailed safety home. BATARA KALA It is good to know some of the folktales that our country has. Here is one of the legends that are commonly told in java. People in some villages in Java believe that an eclipse happens when the sun or the moon is swallowed by Batara Kala, the evil giant. Although Batara Kala is not one of the gods in heaven, he is very powerful. One day Batara Wisnu (god the protector) distributed the Tirta Amerta Sari or the drink of the gods. Anyone who drank it would never die. Batara Kala wanted to have some, too, so he tried to cheat by changing himself to form of a god. Batara Surya (the sun god) and Batari Chandra (the moon goddess), however, knew of this trick and told Batara Wisnu about it. When Batara Kala’s turn came to receive the drink, Batara Wisnu shot him from a distance with his famous weapon, the chakra and it cut his head off. Some of drink, however, soiled over Batara Kala’s head, and this made his head live forever. From then on, Batara Kala continued to live without his body. Batara Kala was very angry with Batara Surya and Batari Chandra and tried to swallow them, but the god and the goddess escaped. Batara Kala got angrier and from that time on he never stopped chasing them, Batara Wisnu wanted to protect the gods and goddesses.
