World War I involved two opposing alliances - the Allies including Great Britain, France, Russia, and later the United States, versus the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. New countries like Poland emerged from the defeated empires, and the League of Nations was formed to maintain peace. Nationalism, imperialism, and militarism were underlying causes of the war.
