Making Inferences:
 Logical guesses about characters, the setting, and
events by recognizing and using details in the story
You ask your brother how he did on his driving
test. He replies by slamming the driver’s
manual down on a table and snapping, “I
don’t even want to talk about it.”

Conflict and Resolution
Conflict: a struggle between opposing forces
External Conflict: a character struggles with an outside force
such as nature, society or another character
Internal Conflict: characters struggles with themselves:
clashing emotions, feelings, beliefs or desires
Resolution: occurs when the conflict or problem is solved
Bill and Juan are best friends who go to the same
  school. The baseball coach at their school recently
put up a sign-up sheet for pitching tryouts. Both boys
   have signed up to try out. Juan feels that if Bill is
 selected as a pitcher and he is not, Bill will not want
  to be on the team. Juan wants his friend to be the
 pitcher but does not know if he should say anything
                         to Bill.

What type of conflict? Internal or External
What do you think the resolution will be?
Answers

What type of conflict?     Internal
One possible resolution will be that Juan tells Bill how he
feels and that he would want Bill to be the team pitcher, even
if Juan himself doesn’t make the team.

Making Inferences
        As Jenny turned away from the window, she was frowning deeply. She
walked quickly across the room toward the door to the kitchen and to the back
stairs. Then she stopped and turned back into the living room. A loud knock
sounded at the front door. Hearing it, Jenny jumped slightly and grabbed the
back of a chair. The knock came again. Biting her knuckle, Jenny glanced
toward the kitchen door and then back toward the front door. A third knock
sounded. Jenny could hear her mother calling her name. But still she stood,
nervously holding the back of the chair.
