CPU technologies have scaled well in past years, by more complex architecture design, more wide execution pipelines, more cores in same processor, and higher frequency. However accelerators show more computational power and higher throughput with lower cost in dedicated area, which leads to more usages in Spark. But when we integrate accelerators in Spark a common case is huge performance promises through micro test with little performance boost actually we get. One reason is the cost of data transfer between JVM and accelerator. The other reason is the accelerator lack the information how it's used in Spark. In this research, we investigate the usage of apache arrow based dataframe as the unified data sharing and transferring way between CPU and accelerators, and make it dataframe aware when we design hardware and software stack. In this way we seamlessly integrate Spark and Accelerators design and get close to promised performance.

To store this data and process it in an appropriate time you need to partition the data and parallelize the processing of reports and analytics. This talk will demonstrate how to parallelize data processing using Hazelcast and it’s underlying distributed data structures. With a quick introduction into the different terms and some short live coding examples we will make the journey into the distributed computing. While working with large enterprises that have several users running Apache Spark applications on a shared cluster, we have observed that they often run into problems prioritizing workloads and achieving their end-users and application Service Level Agreement (SLA) on account of resource contention. Configuring YARN queues is the first step, but that alone cannot efficiently take into account job priority as well as job SLA’s. Mitylytics has developed dynamic policy based job scheduling techniques that have been integrated with our machine learning service to fine-tune job scheduling. We illustrate this with our tool called “mity-submit” that can be used as a wrapper around any submission script to take advantage of these scheduling techniques for optimized Spark Job execution in a multi-tenant environment. With these techniques, Spark jobs execution performance improved. We have significantly improve throughput for high priority jobs while “best-effort” queues are not starved. In addition to this, CPU and Memory utilization of the Cluster was at an optimal level.

Talk Abstract As with all open-source databases, Accumulo developers often compete between building exciting new features and hacking on performance and stability. As the core features solidify and expand, we see many opportunities to improve performance. An effective methodology for performance improvement is scientific in nature, and follows a well-definite modeling and simulation approach, matching theory to experimentation in an iterative fashion. Ingest performance is one of the most differentiating characteristics of Accumulo. However, there is much room for improvement for typical ingest-heavy applications. Accumulo supports two mechanisms to bring data in: streaming ingest and bulk ingest. In bulk ingest, the goal is to maximize throughput without constraining latency. Bulk ingest involves creating a set of files that conform to Accumulo's internal RFile format and then registering those files with Accumulo. MapReduce provides a framework for generating, sorting, and storing key/value pairs, which form the primary elements of preparing RFiles for bulk ingest. MapReduce has been used many times over the years to break sorting records, such as Terasort. We can expect it is a reasonable choice for maximizing bulk ingest throughput. However, the theory often proves challenging to implement as there are many performance pitfalls along the way. In this talk, we dive deep into optimizing MapReduce for Accumulo bulk ingest. We share detailed theoretical and empirical performance models, we discuss techniques for profiling performance, and we suggest reusable techniques for squeezing the maximum performance out of enterprise-grade Accumulo bulk ingest. Speaker Chris McCubbin Director of Data Science, Sqrrl Chris is the Director of Data Science for Sqrrl. He has extensive experience with the Hadoop ecosystem and applying scientific computation algorithms to real-world datasets. Previously, Chris developed Big Data analysis tools for the Intelligence Community and applied artificial intelligence techniques to unmanned vehicle systems. He holds a MS in Computer Science and BS in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Maryland.

GPUs and ASICs are helping on the compute side, whereas in-memory and flash storage devices are utilized to keep up with those local IOPS. All of those can perform extremely well in smaller setups and under contained workloads. However, today's workloads require more and more power that directly translates into higher scale. Training major AI models can no longer fit into humble setups. Streaming ingestion systems are barely keeping up with the load. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category.
