The Dark Knight (2007) Who is the hero/Villain? The villain of the story is shown to be a gang of bank robbers, though later we discover the leader (Joker) as he is the only one to survive out of the rest of the robbers during the beginning of the plot and he escapes with the banks money- he is clearly depicted as the villain of the movie. His appearance is also shown to be that of typical villains, as he seems to have face deformities. Whereas the Hero of the story is later shown to be a banker, he tries to help the innocent hostages inside the bank by shooting at the villain and his henchmen, However he is soon killed showing him not to be the key hero of the story. Where's the story set? What does this tell you about the genre? The story is set in the city of Chicago supposedly "Gotham City", The opening takes place in Gotham's bank where a robbery is about to take place, showing the fictional city to be one that is plagued with crimes and many villains. From the very first scene we can tell from the combination of characters and setting that the movie will be a thriller. How many principle characters are there? In the opening their is only one main character to be shown, he is the boss leading the bank heist- seems to be different to others, and seems to be the only one to survive out of all the other bank robbers. How is the story told? Chronologically? Or does it switch between present and past? What is the effect? The story is told chronologically using various jump cuts to show what is happening in different areas of the location, we get the feeling that the event was planned and those executing the event are very organized. What questions are you left with concerning the story? We are left to ponder who the hero of the story is, we also do not know the villains intentions and what he plans to use the money he just stole on. Theory?-
The Departed (2006) Who is the Hero/Villain of the story? From the opening of Departed we cannot tell the hero or villain of the story, the man who opens the film is only seen to be talking with a cigar lit in his mouth which may give him an evil representation, however he is later seen giving a small boy some money as well as some food which means his true character and intentions remain unknown. Where's the story set? The story appears to be set in Boston. How many principle characters are there? There seems to be two principle characters as we see the man who opens the film forming a relationship with a young boy so they are the two main characters. How is the story told? Chronologically? Or does it switch between present and past? The story seems to be told chronologically as we see one of the main characters in the beginning of the film turn from boy to man. What questions are you left with concerning the story? what is the effect?- We are left to ponder the relationship with the man and boy as well what becomes of them both together in the future. Theory?-
Se7en (1995) Who is the hero/Villain? There is no clear Hero or villain to be shown in the beginning of this film as we only get to see parts(hands) of one person to begin with. Where's the story set? We cannot tell where the story is set exactly, but we assume it is in the house of the only character shown. How many principle characters are there? There is only one principle character to be noted, and that is the only character shown in the intro, we do not know who he/she is. How is the story told? Chronologically? Or does it switch between present and past? What is the effect? It seems to be done in chronological order as there are a series of matched cuts showing the character to be doing certain things in an order e.g. cutting pictures and scribbling over them with a black marker pen. What questions are you left with concerning the story? We are left with a lot of questions, such as who is the character opening the film? What he/she is doing and why that is? Theory?-
Memento (2000) Who is the hero/Villain? We assume that the villain in this story is the man holding the photograph, as we see throughout the beginning of the film to have killed a man, while the hero of the story seems to be a mystery as no one else in the beginning is shown except the villain and the man he just killed. Where's the story set? The story appears to be set in a run down building due to cracks in the walls and poor lighting. How many principle characters are there? There seems to be only two principal characters in the beginning, and that is the villain as well as the man we witness him murder. How is the story told? Chronologically? Or does it switch between present and past? What is the effect? The story is told through reversed matched cuts meaning it is not chronological, we get the sense of the situation, also giving us insight into the main characters mental perceptions and what may have been going through his head at the time. What questions are you left with concerning the story? We are left pondering the main characters motives for the murder, as well as why the need for the reverse match cuts in the beginning. Theory?-
Kill Bill vol 1 (2003) Who is the hero/Villain? We see the villain in the film to be a man presumably shooting a bride on her wedding day, while the woman(bride) dressed completely in white is seen to be the innocent heroine even though she is presumed dead after the shooting. Where's the story set? The story is set in the chapel, and the woman in her wedding dress supports this location though it is not entirely sure. How many principle characters are there? There seems to be two principle characters in the beginning, the bride and the man who supposedly kills her. How is the story told? Chronologically? Or does it switch between present and past? What is the effect? The story isn’t told chronologically as it seems to be set at the end of the wedding and we do not know what happened before or during it. What questions are you left with concerning the story? Because of the lack of footage shown in the beginning, we are left with a lot of unanswered questions such as what is the relationship between the bride and her apparent killer?, why is this happening to her? And what is it that she says before the rolling of the titles? Theory?-
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) Who is the hero/Villain? The hero of this film is seen to be the leader of the resistance who we see in a battle trying to defend the human race, whereas the villain of the film is seen to be the terminator, a machine shown to be in a large battle with the humans in the beginning of the film. Where's the story set? The story is set around different areas of a city, showing different people with there different aspects of life, such as people driving in the motorway and children playing in a playground. How many principle characters are there? There seems to be three main characters in the beginning, the leader of the resistance, the terminators and the narrator who seems to be the leaders mother. How is the story told? Chronologically? Or does it switch between present and past? What is the effect? The story is told chronologically, with the exception that the story cuts into the near future showing things which are yet to come giving us a firmer background to the story of the film. What questions are you left with concerning the story? We are left with wondering if the leader will survive the terminator or if he will be victorious, or if he will be able to stop the war between war and machine altogether? Theory?-
