New from BookNet Canada: BNC CataList - Carol Gordon (BookNet Canada) - Tech Forum 2020

Editor's Notes

  1. Hi everyone, I’m Carol Gordon Project Manager at BookNet Canada for the CataList Project. thanks for joining me for an update on the BNC CataList project – what we’ve rolled out in the past year, what we’re working on now and a peek at some of the exciting plans on the project roadmap ahead.
  2. 2019 was a busy one for the CataList team. We implemented a number of major additions and upgraded in the last year.
  3. At Tech Forum 2019 were in beta testing with a new initiative to collect and integrate display of sales assets like samples, excerpts and guides. In April we rolled out that to the CataList live site with a focus on continuing to gather more material for display.
  4. Since that time we’ve collected, through direct file uploads and ONIX file submissions, a significant amount of content for titles listed in CataList, including 62 thousand excerpts, 28 thousand tables of contents, 22 hundred reading group guides and 500 general sample files. Some good numbers in that time, and we are continuing to encourage publishers to submit content.
  5. Accessing samples and excerpts in CataList can be done from the title detail page, and ….
  6. from Scroll view in the Content preview section. For retailer, library and media accounts, a quick reminder that if you are not seeing sample and excerpt content where you expect to, make sure that you are logged into the site, as logged in users have access to supplemental content that is not available to public site visitors.
  7. Following that initial release in the Spring, we were approached about adding support in BiblioShare and CataList for another supplemental content piece – and that was teacher’s guides. We reached out to our CataList participating publishers and they responded by supplying 1,000 teacher’s guides in a really short timeline and we integrated those into CataList in the Fall. Shout-out to the folks at Ampersand for that great idea, and Annick for providing our initial test files.
  8. For publishers, if you want the information on supplying sample, excerpt and other content into BiblioShare, where CataList and other supply chain data partners can pick them up, Tim Middleton and I did a webinar on this topic in June. The recording of that webinar is still available on the BookNet YouTube channel, and there is a link to it as well in the CataList user documentation.
  9. The next item that the CataList team worked on this year, came as a bit of a surprise priority for us. The User Group that we meet with twice a year brought us a request to make it easier to organize their seasonal and custom catalogues. That request was met with resounding support from the whole group, and so we rebuilt the features in the Organize tool.
  10. The new Organize catalogue functions include the ability to use multi-level sorting on columns,
  11. A more visible click and drag function where you can gab the row handle to drag titles to a new location, the ability to mark titles for removal *- and also easily restore them back into the catalogue before saving changes if you’ve flagged a title for deletion in error. You now also have the ability to send any title to the beginning of a catalogue, to the end of catalogue, or to a specific row number anywhere in the catalogue.
  12. But by far our biggest CataList project this year, and the one that’s been top of the feature request list by publishers, libraries and retailers for some time is the rebuild of our core search functionality. In beta testing now, and releasing by the end of this month – March 2020 – our fully rebuilt search and refine functionality gives users the flexibility to quickly and easily find the titles and catalogues they need.
  13. The first thing you’ll notice about the new search, is that you can Quick Search for a more than just books on a keyword match. You can also search for catalogues, or for a list of ISBNs.
  14. Depending on your search type, you’ll get either catalogue or book results. In this case we’ve searched for Dewey Diva catalogues, and we get back 23 catalogues in a list from the system. Catalogues return with the most recent first, and you can filter matches using the refine tools in the left sidebar by catalogue type (as shown in the slide you can see you’ll get both seasonal and custom catalogues returned), You can refine by the company who has posted the catalogue, and by the catalogue status. For publishers, if you have custom catalogues that are shared to all users and are posted to your publisher page, those catalogues will also return in this search.
  15. For book results, whether you search for books matching your search terms or for a list of ISBNs, you will get our book results page returned with all title matches in the system. We’ve updated the layout of biblio content for each matching title in the main column, but the most noticeable difference for system users in the new search is the ability to apply an extensive set of filters to your result set. Unlike the previous version of the system, we no longer apply pre-limiters to the results – so if titles are postponed or cancelled, they will return in your search results so you can see what the current status of that book is. And then you can filter your results by publishing status if you want to only look at the forthcoming or available matches.
  16. I think a lot of the filter functionality here is going to be pretty intuitive and familiar to people so I don’t think I need to go into a lot of detail on the filters. But I do want to call out a few of the additions we think are going to be especially helpful – starting with the ‘Catalogued by’ filters. On the surface this is a pretty straightforward filter – the ability to limit results by which company has listed those titles. What is powerful in this filter is the first option in the list “My favourites”. If you have set favourite publishers and imprints (and you can do that in the favourites tab on the CataList Home page), with a single click you can filter your results to show only titles belonging to your favourite publishers and imprints. So if you are a rep who sells only a part of a major distributor’s list, or a sales agent who sells a variety of publishers, or a niche retailer with a small set of preferred publishers, this gives you a quick and easy way to limit a large set of search results to just the titles relevant to your needs.
  17. The other two filters I want to call attention to are related to regionality, which is becoming of increasing interest and importance across the supply chain. The first of those is the Contributor location. I’ll talk more about the data supply side in a minute, but we know that retailers and libraries are always looking for local content and to support and local authors to promote. Most publishers in the supply chain already support the CA Country Code in their bibliographic metadata to flag Canadian contributors, but where we have additional Contributor location data, we now allow users to drill down further into province and location levels.
  18. On the subject and book location side, we also allow filtering by geographical region. So if you are looking for local interest titles, or books set in a specific area you can give this filter option a try.
  19. The last one I wanted to mention is the available content. This is a where you can see which titles in your search results have any of that wonderful content that we integrated last year, like samples, excerpts and guides. Some of that content may be useful for getting a sense of forthcoming titles in order to place an initial order or recommend a title for Loan Stars. Others are useful for supporting reading initiatives, teachers (or even possibly parents) who may be looking for educational content. In terms of reading group guides, this is a space publishers might want to consider creating and sharing more content.
  20. A stat from our consumer research indicated that the percentage of Canadian book buyers who belong to a book club or reading group jumped from 7% in 2018 to 14% in 2019. That is a significant jump, and led to a more detailed study of book clubs in Canada – if you’re interested in finding out more you can read a sample and get the full study at booknetcanada.ca slash reading dash together.
  21. We think these new tools are going to be really useful promoting Canadian books and authors. But everything the search tools can do is based on publisher data, and the tools will only be as good as the data we receive.
  22. At BookNet we’ve been encouraging the use of keywords for some time, and we are starting to index and display keywords in CataList now. Our keyword focus is shifting somewhat now to encourage publishers to think critically about whether keywords being adding are useful for search purposes. Adding the keywords ‘Harry Potter’ to every middle grade fantasy novel is not useful and encourages people to consider excluding all keywords from their search parameters. Tom Richardson is going to cover this greater depth in his data quality presentation, so I highly recommend checking that presentation out as it covers a number of quality issues that can affect search not only in CataList, but also on retailer sites and elsewhere.
  23. Likewise, filters are also only useful when we have the data points provided that they system filters on. There is a lot of excitement about the contributor place and geographical region filters in the new search. If you want your titles to be found when retailer, library or media users apply these filters then we need to have that data provided in your ONIX files. Contributor location can be provided at some level in both ONIX 3.0 and ONIX 2.1. Most publishers support country code for Canadian authors, but few support the region level which carries the province information. ONIX 2.1 does support region level codes, so if you’re stuck with ONIX 2.1 for the moment, there is an option to support province level data available to you. Most publishers though are now underway with their ONIX 3.0 transition and this is where there is full support for contributor location data. You can provide a code with each location to indicate whether it’s the author’s birthplace or current residence for instance, and optionally provide details down to the town or city name. With the growing adoption of ONIX 3.0 in the supply chain, we expect to see a significant increase in the amount of contributor location data provided soon, probably by this summer.
  24. With regards to the Geographical region filters, CataList pulls in and filters on two subject schemes - the BISAC Regional themes and Thema geographical qualifiers. In terms of recommending one over the other, if you are looking at the best one to use if you are just starting out with adding region codes, the entire BISAC Regional list support for Canadian regions consists of 23 Canadian codes – mostly province and capital cities - while Thema has about 180 Canadian geographical qualifiers. The Thema codes are far and away more granular and descriptive, but they don’t stand alone, they are part and parcel of a full implementation of the Thema subject code standard. If you haven’t considered Thema as an option for subject coding yet, I would recommend at least getting familiar with this new standard and seeing how it could support your business needs, especially if you publish regionally focused books. For more detail on the how-to supply these data points in your ONIX files, check out the BookNet website and our standards and best practices documentation online. We’ll be continuing to push out information on ONIX 3.0 in general this year, and these key elements will be part of that educational push.
  25. Moving on - as I’m sure you know, if you’ve been following the CataList project for any amount of time, we don’t sit still for long on the CataList team, so while we are getting all that fun new search functionality rolled out the door, we’ve also been looking ahead at the next things coming down the road.
  26. We’ve already been out talking to reps and retailers about the catalogue scroll view – finding out more about what they like about it, what’s missing, what needs improvement. We’ve gathered up some of the great ideas that have been passed along to us in those discussions and are in the process of looking at new data elements and layouts, and reviewing the scroll view workflows. This is a key item in our priority list and we’ll start working toward implementing improvements as our development cycles allow.
  27. But we have another big project now on the radar as well. We are in talks currently with BTLF in Quebec about a system integration for French and English data using the CataList platform. There are still a lot of details to be finalized on this, in many ways those discussions are still exploratory, but we know that this work would also tick some items that are top of the list for our library, sales rep and retail users including additional advanced search functionality built on the upgraded search engine, multi-user cart functions and improvements to the order sharing and submission process.
  28. All in all, despite the <unusual> start to this year, we’re still excited about the plans for the year ahead and hope that CataList can equip reps and buyers to keep communications about forthcoming books flowing even in these challenging. As always, if you have questions about any of the new items we’ve added this year or future plans for CataList, feel free to get in touch with me at cgordon@booknetcanada.ca or our team at our main support address catalist@booknetcanada.ca.
