1. Music Video Report
Iconography
Iconography of our music video will have a few different aspects to it. Firstly the
iconographic object used will be the use of alcohol bottles. This is typical of the video we will
be producing in this specific genre because dance music is aims at a young audience which
relates to this iconography. Also the use of minimum lyrics and a lot of instrumental music is
iconic of the dance genre because the stereotype of the genre has developed to be very
performance based, around performing rather than lyrics. Also iconography can be shown in
the setting such as the use of dance music being popular in clubs and environments with
young adults and late age teenagers. Again the same affect can be seen in lighting such as
the use of strobe lights which is very popular in the dance music genre as it links to the use
of clubs.
Characters
The characters used within the music video will be a mixture of males and females. The age
of all these characters will be late aged teenagers and young adults who will still be involved
in a social life of young adults. Todays society reflects how both genders will socialise
together and can be reflected in the dance genre music videos because of the stereotype of
dancing in clubs, however the costumes used on the characters will be what is in fashion
with the young adult generation at the moment.
Lyrics
However there is not necessarily meaning behind the lyrics as it is not a narrative linear
music video. But the lyrics can be seen to reflect the actions of the video we will be creating.
Although it will be performance based the lyrics will represent the actions from the
characters involved in the video. The lyrics such as “I wanna go out every night” will reflect
the social state of young adults in todays society.
Genre
The genre of video is a linear music video. We will portray the events of what happens in a
normal night out for a teen born and bred from Salford. This will include alcohol, dancing,
flashing lights and also anything related to night out on the town. Our objective is to create
a music video which is as realistic as possible. We have taken into account our first person
experience and based the music video on true events. The music video is specifically linear
because it is a straight forward sequenced video which means it has an obvious start and
finish.
2. Camera
As a group we will be using many different camera techniques and shots for example long
shots and close up shots, we will also include fast shots and continuous shots making the
video seem more realistic.
Props
When discussing the props of the music video we thought it was essential that we
attempted to copy the stereotypical ‘night out’. This including props such as alcohol etc.
Alcohol specifically as we need to construct the message that the young teens are having
fun under the influence of alcohol. We also felt we need to capitalize on the use of lighting
to create the disco light affect. The mixes of colours such as red, yellow etc are
stereotypically used when creating or describe a ‘disco’ like scene. Discos are of course the
modern day equivalent of night clubs which are scene as fun. If we could create the
representation that they were free, rebellious teens then we would be successful in creating
a video that audiences that could relate to, especially teenagers as in modern society
mischievous behaviour is appreciated.
Plan
When constructing a plan we felt it was essential to create a very detailed image to the set-
up of our video. We need large numbers of teenagers to create the sense of a party. We also
need specific and high quality props to create a realistic music video. In order to construct a
plan that had minimal flaws we decided to share responsibility.
Sound
The sound that will be in our video will be the actual song itself. In parts you may be able to
hear people in the background but not much. In the main the only sound you will hear will
be the diegetic sound which is the song. It will be loud and you will be able to hear a big
bass line, it will be a mixture of lyrics and instrumental.
Lighting
Strobe lights will be used, this will work well with the darkness of the club. There will be
quite a lot of flashing lights and they will be bright. In the first scene there will be neutral
lighting as this scene will be set in a house.
3. Mise en scene
At the start the video will be in a house because this is where we will start. Then the next
scene will be set in the club, you will first see us in the queue to get in the club and then it
will cut to when we are inside. Then moving on to leaving the club and entering a taxi.
This is my ideas generation mind map which helped me influence the ideas which will go in
to my production piece.
