USC Upstate • 5,500 students, 820 transfer students each year. • Transfer students miss the library instruction sessions in the first year program. • Created a BlackBoard “inventory of information literacy skills.” • Suggestion of using a game, inspired by Mary Broussard’s Goblin Threat Plagiarism Game. • Collaboration with Sebastian Vandelden, Computer Science Professor. – One of his students, Cory Bohon worked on creating the game as a project for class. – A group of librarians created a story board. – Cory used Hype on his Mac to create the pirate game this past semester. It is now complete and in the testing phase.

- - University 101, English 101, and English 102 - Really, this was a Blackboard quiz and it was completely voluntary. We did offer a raffle to help increase the number of participants. We had about 10% of transfer students participate each semester in the Blackboard tutorial. - I suggested we try to create a game to test information literacy skills in transfer students. My inspiration was Mary Broussard’s Goblin Threat plagiarism game at Lycoming College. We use that in our Plagiarism prevention workshops and students always say that’s their favorite part of the workshop. - A group of librarians created a story board with our questions and ideas and gave that to Cory to use to create the game.
- - It’s not perfect, but it’s much better than the Blackboard quiz we used to have. Hopefully using a game format will motivate more students to play the game and learn more about how to use the library. - After we get a list of students e-mail addresses that completed the game and submitted their score, we will send them a follow up e-mail with information for transfer students and a link to the transfer student LibGuide. - Cory set-up a program to collect the scores, names, and e-mail addresses of students and gave us administrative rights to collect and then erase the results after each semester.
