Summer reading programs are kicking off on June 9th across Brooklyn libraries. People can sign up online or with paper forms, and will get a username and password to log their reading on the summerreading.org website. The website allows users to log books, review books, earn virtual badges, and enter prize drawings. Libraries will be hosting various events throughout the summer and handing out prizes at the end for participants of all ages.

- This year’s theme for Brooklyn Public Library’s Summer Reading program is One World, Many Stories, which celebrates cultures around the world.
- - Summer Reading at Brooklyn Public Library is a program that encourages and inspires reading for all ages, especially school age children and teens. - Reading is critical over the summer months to help kids maintain and improve their reading skills. Young people who do not read over the summer fall behind in school. This is our message for adults and teachers, but for children and teens our message is that books and the library are BIG FUN.
- You will see our world travel themed art in the library and on buses, phone kiosks, and subway entrances throughout Brooklyn.
- Summer Reading kicks off Thursday, June 9 All Brooklyn neighborhood libraries host an Open House 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Central Library hosts a kickoff event 10:30 – 4:00 p.m.
- You can fill out a paper form with the library or sign up online at www.summerreading.org.
- If you use a paper form, the library will use your name and birthday to create a username and password for you on summerreading.org. Log in to summerreading.org to change your username and password.
- The Summer Reading booklists recommend fun, high-interest books for all ages, but you can read whatever you like! The lists can be found in these lists or online.
- Recommended books in Spanish for all ages and Large Print versions of the booklists are on BrooklynPublicLibrary.org.
- The library awards readers of all ages for signing up, attending programs, showing their reading log, and other activities.
- Younger children birth to about age 9 will enjoy the activities in our passport game. Older children 10 and up will like the activities in the older Tweens and Teens passport game. (Let children 10-12 choose which game they’d like to play.) Complete the passport activities to enter the prize drawing.
- Players advance by reading, attending programs and checking out items. The My Journey activities encourage exploration of other cultures using library materials. Children collect stickers.
- On the older game, the activities are a bit cooler and more sophisticated, like watch a Bollywood movie to learn some new dance moves. Instead of stickers, tweens and teens can earn extra entries into the prize drawing for finishing a section.
- Those who complete the passport game can enter to win a Sony Bloggie pocket video camera, donated by Willoughby’s Camera Emporium.
- Summerreading.org is where Summer Readers from all over the city share what they are reading and collect badges for library activities. Summerreading.org creates communities of readers. We like to call it a “GoodReads.com” for New Yorkers of all ages.

- …post reviews and give the thumbs up to reviews you like.
- You can also collect badge codes from library staff for attending programs, volunteering, and other library activities!
- Librarians can also give a badge code in storytime, book discussions or movie programs to add multiple books or media to your log.
- We are piloting special profile pages for schools. Participating schools will get their own admin login so they can tailor their own school profile, promote student participation, and message their students. They will get an easy-to-remember URL such as www.summerreading.org/Brooklyn/PS123. We are working towards helping schools see the connection between participation and higher reading levels.
- At the end of the summer, students can print certificates, reading logs, and badges, and bring them to school to show their participation.
- Set an example for the young people in your life by creating your own profile. Let them see you reading and talking about books.
- All neighborhood libraries have a closing party in late August with performers, raffle prizes and certificates for all Summer Readers.
- Join readers all over Brooklyn for a summer of great books and fun!
