free.
How to start a blog?
If you are looking for “how to start a blog?” then you are in the
right place. In this post I go over the different considerations
and decisions you have to make when you start a blog.
Before you think ‘how to start a blog?’ Decide WHY you want
to blog?
Are you trying to blog for fun, are you running a business that
you want to advertise or do you want to make money online
blogging? It is up to you to decide what you are trying to
achieve. Some people may just like to write which is fine,
but if you are just filling a lonely blog with rubbish articles that
nobody is reading then what is the point?
Decide what you are going to blog about?
What you are going to blog about should be made easier when
you have a definite WHY you are blogging.
Think about who you are speaking to? Eg who is your ideal
audience and what would they want to hear from you?
There are many different ways to go about this. You can stick
to one topic eg organic tomato growing, fitness tips etc and
build up a blog full of great content and hence gain credibility
as an expert in that field. Some people blog about current
events, adding videos and opinion articles to their blog. Some
people write product reviews. This really is up to you.
Free blog or paid blog?
How to start a blog – free blogs
Free blogs include blogger.com, wordpress.com
(wordpress.org is a free software that you then have to
upload to your own domain and hosting service), blog.com,
weebly.com. Simply do an internet search there are plenty of
free options out there.
Now with most things in life freedom isn’t free. Your blog
will not be your own, the domain will be something like
bradsblog.wordpress.com so you will have the same domain
name as many other people. If you are looking to make money
most of the free services don’t allow you to advertise on their
sites.
The free blogging services are a good way to start out if you
are a complete beginner but if you are serious about using
blogging for profit then paid solutions are usually better.
How to start a blog – Paid blogs
Now the cheapest way to do this is to pay for your own
hosting and domain name, but you can then use the wordpress
software form wordpress.org. What this means is you own the
domain name eg bradsblog.com and you pay a company to
“host” your website meaning they store all the data from the
site. You can then use the wordpress software to make your
site look how you want.
Of course you do not have to use wordpress you can use any
other website builder tool you want.
Hosting can be found again through a google search but a
cheap option is brainhost.com, hostgator.com, godaddy.com
all offer hosting solutions. I have used both godaddy.com and
brainhost.com with no dramas.
For example godaddy.com hosting starts at $2.99/month. So
you are looking at about $36 dollars a year for hosting.
Most of these hosting provides will provide you with
instructions on how to use their easy 1 click installation of
wordpress on your new hosted domain.

Domain names
Now you will have to register a domain name. You can
use a service at godaddy.com or maddogdomains.com to
register you domain name. You will have to pay they
usually start at around $8 dollars for the domain name.
The more popular domain names usually cost more. Eg
makemoneyonline.com (if it’s even available) would cost a lot
more than johnsmithfromenglandlovesfootball.com. So for a
lot of people an easy and cheap yet not very creative option is
to go for firstnamelastname.com eg johnsmith.com
The domain name is important but don’t worry you can always
change your hosting to another domain name, or have multiple
domains re-directed to one site. For example you might own
3 domain names but have it so if you type in any of them they
all go to the same website.

Once your website is up and running we have answered
the question “how to start a blog?” However this is just
the beginning of your journey into blogging! Once you have
started your blog you need to create content and get traffic in
order for it to prosper.
Content
Once you have your site up and running you need to start
posting relevant content in the form of articles, pictures or
videos. For ideas on what to write about check out current
trending videos at youtube.com/charts, news provides like
cnn.com or simply google search news. What are you
hobbies, passions or areas of expertise?
Traffic
The whole purpose of putting content on a blog is for people
to view it. And for this we need traffic. If you want to make
any money from your blog you will need to learn how to drive
traffic to it. There are many different options here depending
on your expertise and budget. Basically traffic can be broken
down into free and paid traffic.
Free traffic includes
• Search engine traffic,
• Social media traffic (facebook,twitter etc),
• Forum posts,
• Article marketing.All of these topics by themselves could
be the topics of pages and pages of how to articles.
Paid traffic includes
• PPC (paid per click) advertising, eg the little ads you see
at the top of every google search,
• Solo ads which is where you pay someone with a large
list of email subscribers to email them and tell them about
your blog,
• Banner advertising – you buy an advertisement space on
a website for a set term eg 1 month
Now all of this needs to be taken into consideration. Starting a
blog may seem like a lot of work and it will be a bit of a learning
curve in the beginning but once it is all set up a good blogger
can pump out articles in under 30 mins.
When think to yourself “how to start a blog?” it can be an
exciting and daunting time. There is a lot to do and you need
focus and determination to make a great blog!
