- I was a student at Lauriston – just like you
- I really wanted to talk about books today I think that is important.
- When I was 12 I picked up The Endless Steppe. It descibes Esther’s life as her family escape the holocaust in Poland and are exiled to Siberia.
- Siberia is a cold, lonely place.
- At first by accident I learnt about Siberia. It was a true story and I wrote to the author and couldn’t believe a got a letter back. I didn’t want to go to siberia but I realised that a book could take m ethere – without me needting to go. And I could connect with someone I’d never met before.

- By Year 12 I had decideed to take a year of to travel. I read enough book that I thought I could do it. - Reading gives you access to other peoples tips and mistakes. Whatever you are interested in there is a book about it. I’d seen these places in my head before I visited. It made it much cooler when I was ther to understand the culture, hitory or to have just read about a secret spot no one else knew about.
- One thing I learnt as I travelled was the power of reading to bring people together. Books help you make friends.Swap, share, discuss.
- I was so into books that when I finished university I joined a publishing company. Lonely Planet.I got to talk to the authors every day. Find out their stories Talk to newspapers, magazines, and ask them to interview authors.I was right between book + travel.
- grown up with the gen-y blogosphere boomThere content all over the webmindless ramblings, brain fart articles, gossip tweetsa minute fraction of the work that goes into publishing a bookA book goes through countless rewrites, rigouresseditorialising, blood, sweat, tears,they end up being a polished, end result of hard work :)movies are entertaining for a couple hoursbut nothing helps you fully immerse yourself in an environment like a novel cannothing is more real and inspiring than a biography that took years of harvesting interviews to writeeven with technology trippling every 2 minutes, humans can't seem to out-evolve the emotional connection with words on a page (tie it into eBooks on ipads + kindle segway)
