 A business plan should never be perceived narrowly
as a document for raising finance.
 A business plan should not be perceived as a tool
needed when you are starting a new organisation or

Setting the context for business planning in operation:
 Understanding the difference between strategic plan
and business plan.
 It is important you know that a business plan should
be preceded by a strategic plan.
 A strategic plan provides details of the core business
operations (services and products of your
organisation based on its core strengths).

Setting the context for business planning in operation:
 Strategic plan- after thoroughly researching a market,
a charity offering affordable childcare services
decides to set up a childcare organisation to meet
needs that are not fully met by existing suppliers.
 Business plan- having taking a decision to set up a
childcare organisation, the organisation should now
proceed to putting together a plan to achieve this
goal. (Never attempt to write a business
plan without first being clear about your
strategic plan, vision or mission)

Description of your organisation
 Brief history of your organisation: when it was
started and why; history of what you have done,
where the organisation is based; who is the
organisation focused on i.e. what type of people
 Organisation Aims & Objects: These should be the
ones taken from your Governing Document
(constitution etc.). It is important that these aims are
consistent with what you are planning to do.

Description of your organisation
 Vision or Mission Statement: Vision is what the
organisation wants the end state of its services to
attain. Mission is the purpose for which the
organisation exists.
Examples: The charity’s vision is to alleviate poverty in the community of Siberia
specifically amongst women. This represents the end state that the organisation wants to accomplish .
The charity’s mission is to train people who are unemployed to develop skills to attain employment
through the job market or self employment route.
