According to physicists in the community and outside appraisals physics is in crisis. Books like these come out, stating math formalism and formulations represent progress, so they continue making more of them, adding complexity with every step. The hope is that at some point, all of it will magically fall into place. That kind of hope consumes time and resources, creating additional problems rather than solving them.
We have anomalies and paradoxes in all fundamental research areas. A blue ribbon panel documented nine major, long term mysteries in 2004. Nine. That’s like trying to fight a battle on nine fronts. Any commander would tell us this is a battle we cannot win, and must not engage in.
Physics knowledge is a kind of information system. Here is the list of major facilities dedicated to producing more data and observations about those 9 major mysteries, even though the information system is known to possess critical defects. It’s like doctors knowing they’re losing the patient, but don’t know why. This Quantum Universe Committee report concluded a revolution is needed, and that was almost 10 years ago.
Unlike physics, in business information systems when we need to deliver change like that, we use project management to ensure our efforts succeed. Why? Because complex projects fail over and over unless we do. To deliver revolutionary physics, we address the cost and schedule, but our focus is almost completely on the vertical axis of performance. Our project must deliver a revolutionary model meeting criteria of real world verifiability… that means experiments which can show when we’ve made an error we need to correct. THAT is the measure of theoretical physics advancement, not increasing complexity of math equations.
Responsibility for altering the course of physics research lies with each organization’s leadership, and that leadership process starts with a vision of success. Clarifying and defining that vision is handled via the process called scoping.
Our vision of success in revolutionary physics is important to interstellar flight to the degree it transforms space capabilities. If we scope our goal in advance, we can more easily determine what needs to be done, what are priorities, and what work to avoid. That last thing is important because as we’re working, we get really good ideas about things to add, and this can continue until the available schedule and budget are exhausted, and nothing’s been completed. This process is called scope creep, and it is the largest known cause of project failure. Like the other big causes, these derive not from the genius scientists and engineers doing real work, but ineffective leadership and management.
The judgment of experts is supposed to be our primary planning resource, but a review of official guidelines suggests that experts in creating transformative science don’t exist. They do. These and others like them have developed precise definitions for everything we should need. Some look at the huge changes like a round earth orbiting the sun, others look at cellular changes in the brain during learning.
We can leverage their latest to define our scope with precision impossible a couple of years ago. Good, precise research on revolutionary science is in books like this. The authors detail that perspective is what distinguishes revolutionary scientific advance from mere innovation. The key determinant is perspective. Fire is magic if we’ve never seen it before. 400 years from now, when our old starship breaks down in the middle of nowhere, we won’t ooh and ah over how amazing our warp drive is. It’s all about our point of view relative to what we’re looking at.
For agencies which officially support revolutionary science to achieve that goal, critical knowledge must be incorporated into practice .
This is a representation of how our brains relate concepts for maximal efficiency. In this case, the concepts being related are structured by a pre-Copernican paradigm of how stars & planets moved.
Here we see a small change which violated the basics of its paradigm: orbits with a delta vee. Changing velocity is impossible within a model of perfect, unchanging heavenly motion. A delta vee acceleration caused replacement of unchanging, eternal heavens with dynamic orbits. In biology, the concept of separately created, unchanging species was replaced by Darwin’s process of natural selection. Our history very clearly demonstrates that our points of view are very limited, and that our perceptions are of narrow spectrum and short range.
Therefore, humility is a good heuristic.
We need to be cautious and pay attention to our biases. Reality is big and complex. Our brains tend to take things at face value, like the perception that universe revolves around us. If that were true, the sky would look exactly the same to our eyes, and that explanation should be good enough forever...
Unless of course we do something unnatural, like learn to keep records, do math, and take measurements. During the 1400’s kings, Popes, the Church, and regular people were desperate when they couldn’t figure out what day it was. People’s spirits could be damned for praying to a saint on the wrong day, plus complex societies like empires are almost impossible to manage if we don’t have a standard calendar.
Not only pressure from the calendar crisis motivated change, whoever solved the date problem could administratively run the table on the known world. By building a mathematical model simple enough to resolve the problems, Copernicus actually made everybody happy, and the Renaissance took off.
There was also a little. side benefit: modern science, and the very first scientific revolution.
This shows the importance of taking into account our point of view, and that future impacts from revolutions cover vast areas, much bigger than the immediate problems we are trying to solve. They go off on strange tangents. So, how does that historical research help us now?In two ways: First, is that we learn to take into account future side effects when we are planning.
The second is that to go from where we are today to the next revolutionary paradigms, we need a concrete problem. This helps with project management’s scope control because it enables us to focus attention, assess ideas that come in, and allocate resources efficiently for a number of activities. The Nersessian Model out of Georgia Tech details processes by which new science knowledge is created, including revolutionary models. Like others, this model also regards concrete problems which require a new model as key. What concrete problems might we choose?We go to the experts on space technology we don’t have today, but expect at some point in the future.
Science fiction is like the Sam’s Club of visions for future technology, lots of which eventually get produced.What you see here is a very small sample.
Science fiction also produces the best elaborated visions of space scenarios and capabilities. Creating believable visions is their job after all, and it’s not surprising they produce the most detailed visions when we compare their budgets with NASA’s innovative advanced concepts program. Interstellar flight generally requires revolutionary physics. Future technologies like force fields and tractor beams might have initial plausibility for our vision, but like the beam weapons, they make poor goals because they’re all technically doable within current cognitive frames. Last year there was a great tractor beam idea presented using induction. In science fiction, warp drives take advantage of one or more domains not subject to the lightspeed limit. Both teleportation and warp drive would require redefinition of fundamentals with something like such a domain. Warp & teleport also present the greatest opportunities to attendees here.
Might such domains exist? A number of approaches are documented for how faster than light might be pursued. Here is where we can get our first glimpse of the power of a well structured, integrated approach. If we should only invest in issues we are reasonably certain to be on the critical path to our goal, and uncertainties in relativity affect the entire list, then resolving the uncertainties related to relativity is on our critical path.
We have to identify a cause before we can address it. For that the PMBOK suggests root cause analysis.
In that analysis, when we work backward from the problems reported by physicists and mathematicians, we can hopefully identify the root of our current crises. We want to look closely at what was going on around the time our current anomalies first appeared. We want to analyze anything unusual, what could introduce significant risk, or relates to Penrose’s “mathematical formalism” report.

When the famous Caltech physics professor David Goodstein was a student halfway through a modern history class, his instructor announced they were ready to start the 20th century. Dr. Goodstein said he “timidly” raised his hand and respectfully asked, “Professor Sir, you spend two weeks teaching us about the theories of 19th century warfare, but you never said one word about the theories of James Clerk Maxwell. Since the theories of 19th century warfare are of no lasting significance, and the theories of James Clerk Maxwell effect every day of our lives, don’t you think that’s a rather bizarre distortion of what’s important about history?” Suggesting perhaps they weren’t so respectful.
Advancing and summarizing the work of Michael Faraday, Maxwell discovered light was electromagnetic, investigated entropy which defines the flow of time, and created a strong foundation from which some argue Einstein’s relativity is trivial to construct. Maxwell’s simultaneous successes from several angles suggested Faraday’s hypothesis of a single unifying structure underlying physics observations was plausible. Maxwell’s math was too advanced for most, but it did seemed headed directly toward taking that trivial step toward what we now would call a grand unified theory or a theory of everything and using one of the two most powerful kinds of algebra today. But just then, something very strange happened.
An ugly, bitter dispute broke out. Maxwell’s results had amazed the scientific community and everyone wanted a piece of the action. Unfortunately, the new quaternion math was so hard, so new, and it seemed so strange that hardly anyone had heard of it much less understood it. It was widely considered unreliable, and treated with suspicion. Oliver Heaviside argued for using 4 simpler, vector-based approximations of Maxwell’s theory which almost anyone could work with. His opponent Peter Tait argued for Maxwell’s critical 20 quaternion equations, and like all arguments, both sides had good points.
The vector approximation ultimately won the day, and Maxwell diplomatically rationalized that to ask researchers to simultaneously learn quaternion algebra, a new notation, and new physical theories would be unreasonable. From an integrated system development perspective, introducing huge amounts of risk for which there are no means to plan, monitor and control, guarantees failure. To be fair, Heaviside was warned at the time of unknown risks, to which he replied “What am I to do, not eat my lunch when I’m hungry because I don’t understand digestion?”
Quaternion math seems to have gathered dust for the next 100 years, but got revived for spacecraft navigation and computer models because of an unmatched power to represent objects in 3 or more dimensions without gimbal lock. Quaternions maintain what’s called “degree of freedom” integrity, and avoid infinities that characterize the mathematical formalism that alarms the physics community. A full risk analysis should probably include detailed review of derivations involved in crisis related theories to see which of them after be performed, followed by well managed rework of theory development using modern technology and techniques.
So, we’ve identified a vision selected by needs that are advantageous to physics and space technology, and we’ve got an idea of near-term steps to make that happen. Even if our work selecting warp drive for a starship is perfect, we still cannot be reasonably certain our vision is good. A full SWOT analysis and other management processes need to be completed and deliverables inspected. We don’t want to end up spending time with the lunatics, the UFO groups, and conspiracy theorists we need Buzz to take a swing at.
Here’s quick list of strengths. They’re pretty impressive, but I have to show you this last one: starship planning which has already been done.
This is a numerically categorized hierarchy of administrative and technical systems information for Starfleet’s Sovereign-Class starship. In project management, these represent the top 2 levels of a work breakdown structure critical for effective management. Fans have worked tirelessly for decades on doing this for fleets of ships, designing all kinds of missions, determining crew characteristics, and so on. ..And that’s just what I got from a glance at the first few Google entries. This is not to suggest this is a plan, or a work breakdown structure on which we can proceed with anything, it’s to demonstrate the incredible public suppport for and engagement with the interstellar vision. This untapped public goodwill is incredible and priceless.
As challenges in space continue to increase, the motivations and potential rewards will grow until they’re irresistible. If you look at the list of tracks for this meeting, there are probably hundreds of specialized topics within each, and they all will be impacted as the problems of building starships are solved.
Aside from developing organizational maturity in leadership and management, we can start immediately to bring technical and math skills like those quaternions to bear reworking the risky stuff that was introduced. Its very hard to believe a study like that would not produce insights. I have made a career out of delivering impossible knowledge to my clients by relying on experts in the field, but most importantly: the best practice standards of project management. To my knowledge, they have never been used, and I would bet that if they can’t make progress in 18 months on this century old problem, I’ll eat my hat.
