27. Oscar Pletsch (also Oskar Pletsch 1830-1888) born in Lower Lößnitz today Radebeul) was a German painter and illustrator.
Oscar Pletsch was born in poverty as the son of a lithographer and art teacher in Berlin. He studied from 1846 to 1850 in Dresden at
the Art Academy under Ludwig Richter and Edward Bendemann. Until 1855, Pletsch was working in Dresden, and then returned to
Berlin in 1871. During this time he developed his genre paintings with motifs from everyday life and family life. Early on, he devoted
himself to the illustration, mostly children illustrations, using mainly the technique of woodcut.
From 1860 (The Nursery including 36 frames, and a a major success) until 1881 he published an annual children's book, becoming
one of the most important and most popular children's book illustrators of the 19th Century, with publications in England, France,
Sweden and the United States.
