Conference Session Description The real life and virtual mission of Community HIV/AIDS Resource Exchange (CHARE Project) is to provide capacity building, technical assistance, training, and social media marketing to enhance the linkage and delivery of HIV/AIDS prevention, education and related services. The Kitely-based component of CHARE Project known as CHARE Village was established to increase the usability and application of OpenSim technology by AIDS service organizations and other public health providers regardless of physical location. As with the real life CHARE Project, the objectives of the virtual-based program are to educate service providers (as well as consumers); enhance the delivery of HIV/AIDS services and resources; expand the organization's outreach; establish collaborative partnerships; earn global recognition for the organization's programs; and encourage behavior change (recognizing AIDS as a chronic disease; not a death threat). Presenter Bio As a consultant, instructor, and former HIV/AIDS project manager, Sally S. Cherry, MT(ASCP) is interested in the integration of virtual worlds and other social media platforms within real life and virtual-based health and wellness capacity building projects. Ms. Cherry's professional experience and interest in laboratory science lead to a diverse public health career as a laboratory coordinator, international medical consultant, national laboratory instructor, HIV/AIDS project manager, and STD/STI lab consultant. The interest in technology and social media fuel her professional and personal mission to integrate OpenSim technology into real life public health projects as well as providing social media capacity building, training, and marketing.

Second only to the general concept of Web 2.0, virtual worlds are the source of more articles in PubMed than any other emerging social technology. Of the many virtual worlds, Second Life (a free, open source 3d virtual world platform) is the one with the strongest presence in health care communities, from patient groups and medical education to research and professional meetings. Second Life can enable health systems to create either public or secure private spaces for functions from patient education, outreach, staff training, remote meetings, or more. As with any social technology, understanding the context and norms of the online space are essential to making institutional engagement a success. In this session, we will look at case studies illustrating how some organizations have used Second Life for communication, collaboration and community engagement.

Together with Carol Perryman (MSLIS, TRLN Doctoral Fellow at School of Information & Library Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) Guus van den Brekel (Coördinator Electronic Services of the Central Medical Library at University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands), is working in a Grant-funded project: "Providing Consumer Health Outreach and Library Programs to Virtual World Residents in Second Life". HealthInfo Island ,which is the home of the Consumer Health Library, the SL Medical Library and NLM/SIS, wants to be a central point in SL for health and medical information and is investigating possible ways of further cooperation with other health and medical non-profit organizations. One of the main targets for the project is to reach out to all Support Groups in Second Life. A brief summary of our findings about working in a virtual environment like Second Life and some future developments is included, as well as an overview of health, educational, clinical, medical related activities in Second Life. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
