Software is often improved incrementally. Each software optimization should be assessed with microbenchmarks. In a microbenchmark, we record performance measures such as elapsed time or instruction counts during specific tasks, often in idealized conditions. In principle, the process is easy: if the new code is faster, we adopt it. Unfortunately, there are many pitfalls, such as unrealistic statistical assumptions and poorly designed benchmarks. Abstractions like cloud computing add further challenges. We illustrate effective benchmarking practices with examples.

Most Java software problems come from the little “broken windows” – a null pointer here or there. Sometimes, however, you find yourself in a nasty section of town, with the heap, stack, and permgen brutally fighting for memory. Threads in nasty knife fights over resources. Sometimes just plain freaky things – how did I wind up with 1.5GB of HashSet allocations? In this edition of CSI: Seattle Java Edition, we’ll look at the tools available to combat these nasty foes and even see some of them in action – we will blow up a lot of application servers and JVMs in the process, with graphic results.

Exploring tips and advice on writing production Go systems that are easy to debug and troubleshoot. Jack Lindamood from SignalFx presents patterns that facilitate this process. Jack addresses tools built into Go you can take advantage of, build process techniques they've learned over time, and open source tools and libraries you can use that help troubleshoot your production code when things go wrong. FREGE - INTRODUCING PURELY FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMMING ON THE JVM Frege is a Haskell for the JVM. In Frege you program with pure functions, immutable values, and isolated effects only. This talk gives you a first impression of what this paradigm means to the programmer and how it makes your code robust under composition, allows refactoring without fear, and becomes safe for parallel execution. This introduction leads you through the benefits that make Frege unique between the JVM languages. It is followed up by the Frege tutorial that provides more detail and examples.

Hardware hacking hit the news quite often in 2017, and a lot of pentesters tried to jump into the band wagon and discover the joy of hacking things rather than servers or applications. But most of them are only looking for rootz shellz and p0wning embedded Linux operating systems rather than doing what we really call "hardware hacking". In this talk, we are going to hack a Bluetooth Low Energy smartlock, from its printed circuit board to a fully working exploit, as well as its (wait for it) associated mobile application you need to install to operate this thing. This talk is not only an introduction into the field of hardware hacking, but also a good way to dive into electronics and its specific protocols, and of course into microcontrollers and System-on-chip reverse engineering. We will cover some electronics basic knowledge as well as tools and classic methodologies when it comes at analyzing an IoT device and will provide tips and tricks based on our experience but our failures too.

Analysis of virtualized rootkit detection methods. Introduces "Samsara", our framework for detecting virtualization and an implementation of data/instruction TLB sizing, HPET timer, and VT errata tests. We predict the future will be cat-and-mouse, where each side analyzes and responds to the behavior of their opponent, ad infinitum. Joint talk given with Thomas Ptacek and Peter Ferrie.

You can only claim you know Spring if you fully understand the Proxy design pattern, and how the framework uses it to do its magic. Join this live-coding session to explore 6 ways of intercepting method calls that you can use to cast your own spells and dramatically simplify your codebase. Grab a strong coffee and prepare yourself for a whirlwind of live-coding, interwoven with deep theoretical concepts and implementation details that you have to master if you are using the Spring Framework. During this session, Victor will share one of the best parts of his Design Patterns training, applied to Spring. You'll hear about the Decorator pattern plus 2 ways to wire it with Spring, bare-hands interface proxies, concrete classes proxies, @Aspect applied to custom annotations, plus some of the most common standard off-the-shelf Spring aspects. Come and learn from a hands-on practitioner real-world best practices of using Aspects, design hints, under-the-hood implementation details, debugging tips, performance impact of aspects, all in an interactive, entertaining and extremely dynamic session. - Talk held at JPoint 2019, Moscow

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.
