I Need Your Love Video Analysis
1.
2. The music video suggests that the location is
outside of the UK and is most likely to be in
America, we can tell this from a range of
establishing shots that we are shown through
most of the beginning of the video, we are
shown shots of a small town/village, foreign
motorway signs and a building with an
American flag (which gives the idea that they
are in America). Establishing shots are
important because they set the scene and
show the audience the location.
It has been made sure that these shots have
been taken so we feel as if we are the eyes of
the camera, for example driving underneath
the motorway sign (top left) with a low angle
shot to make us feel as if we are in the car
with them, the same principle goes with the
other two screenshots on the left. The video
has a fast tempo to it with fast moving scenes
as this compliments the fast tempo of the
song.
3. The narrative of the music video plays on a romance
between a young man and woman, Calvin Harris and
Ellie Goulding play the couple that are in love
together. They play a romantic couple who create are
creating a holiday video, where they can be seen
relaxing on the beach and waking up into bed
together, while creating these holiday videos the
story shows that they leave the camera lying around
somewhere and other people pick it up and record
themselves on it. A narrative is an effective feature
that can either compliment or contrast with the
lyrics of the song, I think that in this case the
narrative and lyrics are linked because the song is
about a girl expressing her love for the man saying
that she ‘needs’ his love, and throughout the video
they are always happy and having fun (there is not a
depressing scene at all). An example of a music video
that would not support the narrative would be
Coldplay's video to their song ‘yellow’, the video is of
a man walking on the beach early in the morning
looking and feeling depressed which goes exactly
against the song title of ‘yellow’. I think ‘I Need Your
Love’ is a song that will be popular with the public
because it has a fast tempo to it and there are scenes
where the pair get intimate which can cause a lot of
controversy in the media.

4. The shots used in this video are different from
most other videos because they are recording
themselves and have less footage of them
being recorded by someone else. The shots that
involve Ellie Goulding and Calvin Harris are
mainly extreme close-ups, close-ups and mid-
shots, and then when the man on the
skateboard has the camera we see close-ups of
him and then mid-shots when he is playing pool.
Towards the end of the video we see some
establishing shots which are also long shots, an
example is when the camera looks down from
the aeroplane and onto the beach and then
again at when we see the sunset behind the
buildings. Close-ups are effective shots to use
because they show the expression on the
subjects face while the lyrics are going with it.
5. This type of shot is different to most shots that you would
typically see in a music video because Calvin Harris is
holding the camera and recording himself, which is usually
something that someone else would be doing for him. The
reason they could have chosen to do this could be because
most romantic holiday videos are recorded by the couple
themselves, and into to show the audience they are trying to
do a holiday video they would have to reconstruct as well as
they can, and I think they have been successful in doing this.
This shot is a two-shot simply because there are two people
in the shot.
This type of shot from what we can see by the video was
recorded on the mobile phone that we can see, during the
video he zooms in and out of the mirror creating a zooming
affect which is unfamiliar in other music videos. I think the
fact that he is so close to us and Ellie Goulding is further
away gives it an extra affect when the camera zooms in and
out.
6. This is a point of view (POV) shot from Calvin Harris as he is
driving on the motorway, the reason for this could be to
emphasise the fact that they are on holiday and travelling
around, in the shots before and after this we see establishing
shots of surroundings and then them both together in the car
happy and smiling. We can also notice in this shot that the
steering wheel on the car is on the other side as to what UK
made cars are which again suggests they could be abroad
in another country but its conclusive.
Throughout the video, we are referred back to the bedroom
where they are in bed together, the room is all white and
really bright, this could be to make the couple stand out
which doesn't allow the audience to look anywhere else but
on them (because there is nothing else in the shot to focus
on). Their acting and facial expressions are good because
they have made it look realistic and as if it is actually a
holiday video.
7. -I think that overall, the images we see on the screen
conform to the sterotypical representations of a romance
holiday because the couple are filming themselves the
majority of the time, we see a lot of shots on the beach, in
the sea and out clubbing which is something that young
adults tend to want to do when they go on holiday together.
-The narrative matches the lyrics so as the video unfolds the
audience can gather the story and purpose of the video.
-A good music video will make the audience remember the
song better, for example if someone who has seen the video
before goes on holiday it might remind them of the song.
-People enjoy watching music videos because it is
something that accompanies the song and in this video it
has a interesting storyline to follow throughout whilst
listening.
