2. Camera Shots
Music videos tend to use many long shots, close up shots and mid shots. This is to create empahsis on the
artist, location and emotions. Also, close ups are used not only to show emotions but to reflect the words of
the song with the movement of the lips of the artist.
Throughout my music video I use these conventions of a music video in terms of camera shots. This is done this
way to make the audience feel what the actor should be giving off and feeling himself as the character. Below
are some parts in my music video where I use some of the following conventions:
3. Mise-en-scene
When thinking about arrangement of the performers I made sure that the actor was placed in the
centre of the frame at most times because he is the main character and the only character. It is
important in my music video that the actor is represented as being isolated and lonely, which is why
we see him along in all of the shots, for example when he is looking over the motorway bridge. I have
made sure the lighting in the music video is dark and gloomy, reflecting on the idea of melancholy and
being alone. The props I used was just a black back, which is in the actors had most of the time in each
shot we see, this reflects on him always being on the move and travelling, which links in with the
theme of the song. My music video also uses other aspects of mise-en-scene, which is things like the
costumes, being dark and mysterious, and the lyrics linking with the visuals we see.
4. Editing
Throughout my music video I have used various editing techniques in
order to fulfil the typical conventions of a music video. One of these
is the use of jump cuts, as they are very predominant in music
videos, and we see a lot of these throughout my music video, for
example when the chorus comes in and it changes from scene to
scene with a jump cut. I have also used fade and dissolve cuts
throughout, and this is one of another key feature to include in
music videos. These are used to create a different effect to cuts.
5. Colour
The colours in my music video are a running theme of greys and
dark, gloomy colours. This is because those particular colours
reflect on the theme of the music video, which is melancholy
and loneliness. I think the colours work well together and create
the atmosphere and give off the correct emotions for the music
video.
