5. Brooke Shaden

Brooke has two degrees,
in film and English. She
started her photographic
career in December ’08.
Her focus is on creating
a world that is not our
own with images that
resemble paintings. Each
image has it’s own story.
Her work is
predominantly self
portraits. When
shooting she works fast,
thanks to her amazing
amount of preplanning,
she usually only takes 5-
10 shots each shoot.
6. Brooke runs workshops in the
US, Canada and Europe. She
takes the students though her
entire process, from concept,
planning, shooting and
Photoshop work.
8. Reaching for Clouds
In this image the photo of the model (herself)
was taken in an open field on an overcast day
and the sky is a separate shot. Like a lot of her
images there is not real distinguishable
background, just the clouds and a bit of ground.
Visual:
There is a kind of nightmarish feeling within this
image. It’s as if the clouds are trying to sallow
her up like some kind of monster.
Technical:
There are three parts to this image. The model,
the clouds and the part around her head and
stomach. The image has been darkened and
blue/green tones have been added as well as a
texture over the whole image.

10. Thorns That Flowers Grow
Again this is a three part image, the model on
location, the sky, and the flower.
Visual:
This is a very striking image, it’s very much an
image that you take a second look at and realise
that the flower is coming from the head of a
person. Like with all of her work it has a very
moody feel to it.
Technical:
The flower would have been taken on a white
background and cut out and placed and blended
over the models head and face.
The sky has been darkened to add drama to the
image.
The whole images has been darkened, tonal
changes and a texture place over the top of
everything.
12. The Leaves of Linden Avenue
I find this image downright striking. There are so many
different elements within this image that you can’t help look
deeper and deeper within it.
Visual:
This image is so intriguing, there are so many elements. The
sky, the landscape, the model and all those leaves. Each
element seems so disconnected for one another but also
work well together.
Technical:
Each leaf started out as one of 50 scanned leaves, that have
been cut out, duplicating them and changing each one
slightly to create hundreds and hundreds of leaves to make
the dress. The sky has been enhanced to make it look more
dramatic.
