The Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival takes place on the 20 - 29 July. This presentation gives a taster of what to expect from some of the home-grown Scottish performers.

Glasgow‟s answer to Janis Joplin,
Maggie Bell is performing with Blues
n„ Trouble, one of Edinburgh‟s
leading blues bands at the Festival
Theatre.
3. NIKI KING & THE
ELEMENTS
Perrier Jazz Award winner and her
band get down and funky, performing
self-penned tunes of 21st century
love, life and loss.
4. FAT SAM’S BAND
Fat Sam‟s Band was formed by
Hamish McGregor in 1984 and
travels the world. They proudly return
to Edinburgh to delight audiences
with their upbeat jazz.
5. STEVEY HAY'S
SHADES OF BLUE &
SPECIAL GUESTS
Good time blues expertly delivered
with soulful vocals, a swinging rhythm
section and a fistful of emotion
drenched guitar pyrotechnics.
They are joined at the festival by
piano maestro Brian
Kellock and harp guru Spider
McKenzie. A good time guaranteed!
6. AVERAGE WHITE BAND
Making their festival debut this year,
Average White Band have been
distilling R n‟ B, jazz, soul and
Motown into a potent funky mix for
over thirty years and are widely
regarded as one of the best soul and
funk bands in the world.
7. KEN MATHIESON
CLASSIC JAZZ
ORCHESTRA
Ken Mathieson, Scotland‟s eminent
jazz arranger, together with the CJO
will be performing pieces by jazz hero
Bix Biederbecke, then contrasts it
with music by Sidney Bechet, Jelly
Roll Morton and Duke Ellington.
8. PAUL KIRBY
This Edinburgh pianist is making a
huge reputation for himself in the Far
East and Germany. He is performing
at the festival with a
fantastic international band, including
the sizzling female alto saxist, Jin
Pureum, plus Martin Zenker on bass
and Kim Minchan (drums).
9. EDINBURGH JAZZ
FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA
This fine big band may only exist
during the jazz festival, but it has
quickly become established as a major
feature of the programme. In
2012, they will perform a tribute
“The Individualism of Gil Evans” for
his centenary year, directed by Tim
Hagans.
10. BATCHELORS OF JAZZ
Led by trombonist Dave Batchelor,
expect pure jazz entertainment from
this all star cast - Forrie Cairns
(clarinet), Alistair MacDonald (banjo,
vocals), Lennie Herd (trumpet) and
Fraser Spiers (harmonica).
