Thomas Jefferson wished to be remembered for three achievements: authoring the Declaration of Independence, establishing religious freedom in Virginia, and founding the University of Virginia. On his tombstone, which he designed, the only things mentioned are those three achievements. Historians agree that these were Jefferson's most important accomplishments, though they may have added others like his skills in architecture and linguistics. Jefferson conceived of, planned, and oversaw the construction and staffing of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, which he considered his final major accomplishment. He died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
