• Back up renewables quickly, reliably and clean…
Performance of a modern combined-cycle gas turbine:
o Flexible: Time to full power generation capacity 60-
90 minutes
o Efficient: 55-60%
o Clean: Low CO2, NOx, SO2 and particulate matter
…not just separately by balancing the system but also
in direct symbiosis, e.g. with concentrated solar power
• Store renewable electricity as hydrogen or gas

What needs doing in view of 2030?
• Binding economy-wide EU greenhouse gas reduction
target of at least 40%
• Revision of Emissions Trading System
• Non-ETS sectors sensitive to the price of carbon bearing
their costs associated with carbon dioxide emissions

What needs doing in view of 2030?
• Phasing out support schemes for mature renewables +
help for all promising non-mature low-carbon options
• Full + speedy implementation of the internal energy
market, including:
o Removal of distortions, e.g. price caps, obligations to
keep uneconomic power stations open
o Capacity remuneration mechanisms where
necessary
• More Europe and less fragmented national policy
• More competition and less subsidies
