2. The Coral Reef in
Tobago
Tobago has one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the
Caribbean called the Buccoo Reef. This reef is
approximately 7km² and is a protected marine park.
The main corals found in the Buccoo Reef are the Star
and Boulder Coral.
4. What is a Coral
Reef?
Coral reefs are underwater structures made from
calcium carbonate secreted from corals. Corals are
colonies of tiny living animals living together in
marine waters. Reefs grow best in warm, shallow
, sunny and agitated waters.
15. Why are reefs
important?
Coral reefs provide homes for many marine animals.
They are also very beautiful places that attract many
tourists. Many tourists visit the Buccoo Reef each year.
This helps to increase the economy of the country.
16. Preserving the Buccoo
Reef
It is important to protect the Buccoo Reef because once it is
destroyed, it cannot be replaced that easily. It takes many
years, sometimes hundreds of thousands of years, for a
coral to form. Can you imagine how long it would take for
an entire reef to form? Therefore, it is all our responsibility
to preserve the reef to ensure that it is enjoyed for many
years to come.
