- This is from the character Michael Scott from the NBC program “The Office.” The point is that one of my big goals in teaching is to also engage students. I try to establish the importance of purposeful career planning immediately to get their attention and subsequent buy in.
- Purposeful career planning: not for everyone, but everyone should at least be aware of the premise.Career development model: really a decision-making model but with a career context; note that it is a lifelong process from picking a major, picking a career, pursuing a job, changing jobs, planning for retirement, etc.
- This video serves as a nice reminder to examine potential majors and careers from all angles.
- Marketing and advertising a product, service, or person/persona intersects with the digital age and the increasing popularity of social media websites (Web 2.0), and both of these areas cross paths with career development and the importance of marketing yourself effectively during the job search process.
- What is it? The idea is that you should market yourself like an actual brand, as if your personal image were a consumer brand. It’s a process whereby you articulate who you are, your interests, values, and skills across multiple platforms. A negative personal brand can be devastating. Not having one can be just as bad.
- An effective way to establish online presence, especially if you’re a student. Give prospective employers a more complete sense of who you are. Can be built over time (or quickly if doing damage control) by putting thoughts and ideas online and made available for all to see. May not be for everyone – vocational students, takes too much time, etc. Is “brand” or “branding” just a buzzword created by marketers interested in selling books?
