Cover image: Pictured is Mount Etna during a summit eruption on January 5, 2012. Robina
Shaheen et al. measured sulfur aerosol isotope levels contained in snow pit samples collected
at the South Pole to track anomalous peaks between 1984 and 2001 and identify their origins.
In addition to sulfur aerosol isotope peaks that correlated with volcanic eruptions, the highest
peak occurred during a 1997–1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation event. Sulfur aerosol isotope
levels are related to biomass and fossil fuel burning, carbonyl sulfide emissions, and atmo-spheric
dynamics, and they resemble sulfur anomalies observed in the Precambrian. See
the article by Shaheen et al. on pages 11979–11983. Image courtesy of Nicole Bobrowski

  • 1. Cover image: Pictured is Mount Etna during a summit eruption on January 5, 2012. Robina Shaheen et al. measured sulfur aerosol isotope levels contained in snow pit samples collected at the South Pole to track anomalous peaks between 1984 and 2001 and identify their origins. In addition to sulfur aerosol isotope peaks that correlated with volcanic eruptions, the highest peak occurred during a 1997–1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation event. Sulfur aerosol isotope levels are related to biomass and fossil fuel burning, carbonyl sulfide emissions, and atmo-spheric dynamics, and they resemble sulfur anomalies observed in the Precambrian. See the article by Shaheen et al. on pages 11979–11983. Image courtesy of Nicole Bobrowski (University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg).
