1. Background
Modified starch is widely applied in many industries such as food processing, paper making and textile
around the world. Modified starch industry in AP plays an important role in global market since AP is
one of the largest modified starch suppliers and consumption markets around the world. International
trade of modified starch among AP countries has been blooming and future trend of modified starch in
this region has attracted global attention. This report will give an insightful analysis of production and
trade of modified starch in major AP countries. Meanwhile, future opportunity and competition analysis
of modified starch industry in major AP countries would be a key issue in this report.
AP herein refers to Asia-Pacific, a part of the world in or near the Western Pacific Ocean. The area
includes much of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, including Australia, Brunei, China, Indonesia,
Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, New Zealand, Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Japan, Laos, Singapore,
South Korea and Timor-Leste.
Agriculture production’s high proportion in national economy, huge population and continuously
growing living standard, and advantage of resource availability have contributed to tremendous market
potential of modified starch industry in major AP countries such as China, Japan, South Korea,
Indonesia and Thailand. These countries are targets of this report.
Corn, wheat, tapioca, potato and sweet potato are the most important feedstocks in modified starch
production in AP, accounting for 24.81%, 23.69%, 29.70%, 20.30% and 81.06% of global total
respectively by yield. Different AP countries adopt various feedstocks in producing modified starch
mainly according to planting traditions and climates; China mainly uses corn, Thailand and Indonesia
mainly tapioca, Japan, South Korea and Australia mainly wheat. CCM will provide an in-depth analysis
of mass flow from major feedstocks mentioned above to native starch and modified starch in major AP
countries in this report.
China is the second largest modified starch producer around the world with total output reaching about
1.10 million tonnes in 2009. China and Thailand are two major exporters of modified starch in AP
mainly thanks to their advanced production facilities and huge overseas demand. Japan and South
Korea import huge amount of native starch and modified starch in order to meet the strong domestic
demand.
2. Difficulty and critical pathway in this report
Difficulties are mainly showed in part III and part IV
- Part III: Production and consumption information of modified starch in those countries are

hard to obtain.
- Part IV: Mass flow of modified starch among major AP countries is hard to survey.
Methodology for part III
- Sending on-line questionnaires to local modified starch association or researcher in order to
obtain the market information of modified starch industry
- Communicating with local modified starch enterprises, traders by B2B platform or telephone
interviews in order to obtain detailed market information of key modified starch producers
- Cooperating with third party if possible
Methodology for part IV
- Sending on-line questionnaires to local modified starch association or researcher in order to
obtain import and export information of modified starch.
- Purchasing import and export data from local government
- Cooperating with third party if possible
3. Time, manpower needed to finish the research
Two senior consultants and two assistant consultants are needed in order to complete this research by
the end of 17th Dec. 2010
4. Delivery
