Scientific outreach examples we allcan do by Cherisse Du Preez CHONe student & outreach committee cdupreez@uvic.ca 1
The concept of Outreach Incorporates: communication, publicity, media, education, advertising, informing, sharing, etc. Definition: to extend or provide services beyond conversational limits. 2 ...but we’re too busy already!
Not communicating your science shouldn’t be an option ,[object Object]
To be recognized, become known
To give back (educate & enlighten)
For more $$$ or to open up new opportunities
To defend (or attack) scientific work
To change policy or people’s thinking...because there is a greater reason we all study what we do. 3 Why, if we are so busy? (adapted from Vilalta & Kirchner presentation)
(Vilalta & Kirchner presentation) 4 Cynical reason “why” ,[object Object],	interdependent
Easy steps to start you off: What? Your “NEWS” (converting interesting &/or important science into your audience’s language & conveying it) Who? To your lab  university  schools  your community  the general public  NGOs  government, etc. How?So many ways but choose something that appeals to you (you’re own interest will come across) 5 Scientific Outreach Photos by Jackie Lighten, Emily Wilson, Jackson Chu, & Kevin Sorochan (top to bottom, left to right)
