I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO
Artist hides gift for gallery visitors
A stream of art lovers has poured into an art gallery in Milton Keynes in the UK, spending hours studying the
new exhibits intently. The Swiss artists Silvia Bächli and Eric Hattan must be surprised at the success of their
latest exhibition. Only the fact that the visitors are looking just as intently at light fittings, skirting boards and
window sills gives the game away.
“No, nobody has found it yet,” Katharine Sorensen, the gallery’s communications director, said. She has the
slightly weary air of a woman who has spent many days doing interviews with journalists from all over the world.
This is all since the news spread that local artist Tomas Georgeson had hidden a signed cheque for $12,000
somewhere in the gallery.
“We’ve had hundreds of people looking everywhere, and obviously we’ve all had a look, but nobody has seen it.
If,” she added darkly, “it is actually there to find.”
The gallery insists that far from being its own publicity stunt, it knew nothing about the cheque until it heard
about it from the BBC last month.
Georgeson is best known as a painter whose portrait of his father was included in a 2011 National Portrait
Gallery exhibition in London. He knows the 300-metre-square Milton Keynes Gallery well because he has
previously worked there as a volunteer. He said that he had hidden the cheque “as something positive in a town
eager to establish itself as a cultural destination”.
Assuming the cheque does exist and nobody finds it, the artist has said he will retrieve it on 1 March.
Meanwhile the gallery has had to bring in extra staff to guard the displays, although Georgeson said it was not
hidden “on or around” any of the works of art, and asked visitors to take great care not to cause any damage.
“We have definitely seen more people in,” Sorensen said, with a tiny sigh. “Which is great – obviously.”

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO
Adeline Virginia Woolf (25 January 1882 – 28 March 1941) was an English writer, and one of the foremost *
modernists of the twentieth century.
Woolf was educated by her parents in their literate and well-connected home at 22 Hyde Park Gate, Kensington.
Her parents had each been married previously and been widowed*, and, consequently, the house contained the
children of three marriages. According to Woolf's memoirs, her most vivid childhood memories were not of
London but of St. Ives in Cornwall, where the family spent every summer until 1895.
The sudden death of her mother in 1895, when Virginia was 13, and that of her half-sister Stella two years later,
led to the first of Virginia's several nervous breakdowns*. The death of her father in 1904 provoked her most
alarming collapse.
Virginia married writer Leonard Woolf on the 10th August, 1912. She began writing professionally in 1900.
During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society. Her most famous works
include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928), and the book-length
essay A Room o One's Own (1929), with its famous dictum, "A woman must have money and a room of herf
own if she is to write fiction."
After completing the manuscript of her last novel, Be ween the Acts, Woolf fell into a depression similar to thatt
which she had earlier experienced. On 28 March 1941, Woolf put on her overcoat*, filled its pockets with
stones, and walked into the River Ouse near her home and drowned* herself. Woolf's body was not found until
18 April 1941. Her husband buried her cremated remains under an elm in the garden of Monk's House, their
home in Rodmell, Sussex.

THE HISTORY OF MARVEL COMICS
Marvel Comics is home to many of the most well-known and most popular comic book characters of all time. Today they
are a part of the mega-corporation known as Marvel Entertainment, which has massive worldwide revenues and influence.
It was a long journey for Marvel comic books to reach their dominant market position, featuring some down periods as
well as others of explosive popularity and innovation.
The Beginning of Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics, then known as Timely Comics, was originally founded in 1939. It introduced several superhero characters
such as the Human Torch. These characters were successful and gained popularity throughout the United States. With the
arrival of World War II, Timely introduced what would become a mega-hit, Captain America. He and other Timely heroes of
this time often confronted Nazis, with Captain America once even appearing on a front cover punching Adolf Hitler! This
was the Golden Age of comics, with DC Comics’ Superman and Batman leading the way. Stan Lee was briefly the editor
until interrupted by his service in World War II, after which he returned and served for several more decades.
The Downturn
After World War II however, interests and styles changed. The costumed superheroes that were popular were steadily
declining while other themes were emerging. Fear of other threats like nuclear war and Communism appeared. During the
1950s Timely became known as Atlas Comics. Stan Lee now had his heroes fighting Communists instead of Nazis.
Resurrection
In the 60s, superheroes began to reappear on the comic book scene. The Silver Age featured bright, exciting new artwork
and creative storylines. The superheroes of old were transformed into new versions of themselves, with more personal
and emotional stories and backgrounds. Comic books surged in popularity and Marvel Comic books emerged from the
ashes. Stan Lee and his artist, Jack Kirby, introduced the Fantastic Four (including a new Human Torch) in 1961, following
a path paved by DC Comics and their own superheroes. Spiderman, the Hulk, X-Men and Iron Man were all created in
subsequent years and would go on to great critical acclaim and long-lasting popularity. Captain America, too, was revived,
acting as a link between the two eras. Lee gave up editing in the 1970s and became only the publisher.
In recent years, Marvel comics have received an extra boost in popularity due to the success of blockbuster films like
Spiderman and the Avengers. And Stan Lee makes a brief appearance in every single one.

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO
Jane Austen was born on 16th December 1775 at Steventon rectory. After a few months at home, her mother
placed her with Elizabeth Littlewood, a woman living nearby. Elizabeth nursed and raised Austen for a year or eighteen
months. In 1783, according to family tradition, Jane and her sister Cassandra went to Oxford to be educated by Mrs.
Ann Cawley and they moved with her to Southampton later in the year. Both girls caught typhus and Jane nearly died.
Austen was subsequently educated at home, until leaving for boarding school with her sister Cassandra early in 1785.
The school curriculum probably included some French, spelling, needlework, dancing and music and, perhaps, drama.
By December 1786, Jane and Cassandra had returned home because the Austens could not afford to send both of
their daughters to school. After returning from school in 1786, Austen "never again lived anywhere beyond the bounds
of her immediate family environment", stated one of her biographer.
Austen acquired the rest of her education by reading books, guided by her father, George, and her brothers
James and Henry. George Austen apparently gave his daughters unfettered access to his large and varied library, was
tolerant of Austen's experiments in writing, and provided both sisters with expensive paper and other materials for their
writing and drawing. According to Park Honan, a biographer of Jane Austen, life in the Austen home was lived in "an
open, amused, easy intellectual atmosphere".
Early in 1816, Jane Austen began to feel unwell. She ignored her illness at first and continued to work and to
participate in the usual round of family activities. By the middle of that year, her decline was obvious to Austen and to
her family, and Austen's physical condition began a long, slow, and irregular deterioration culminating in her death the
following year.
After Austen's death, Cassandra and Henry Austen arranged with Murray for the publication of Pe suasion and
Nor hanger Abbey as a set in December 1817. Henry Austen contributed a Biographical Note which for the first time
identified his sister as the author of the novels.

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO
BUSKING IN COVENT GARDEN
Busking is a part of British culture and has been since the days of the travelling minstrel, a medieval entertainer who
travelled from place to place, especially to sing and recite poetry. For every famous pop singer or band you may have
heard of, there are thousands of street performers and buskers who play their art on the streets, and in the pubs,
markets and squares of Britain. Covent Garden is just one of these places.
The written history of street performers at Covent Garden goes back to the 1600s, but the scene in its current state
dates from the late 1970s, when the covered fruit and vegetable market underwent its transformation into a tourist site.
As a regularly worked busking pitch, its only rival world-wide would have to be the Pompidou Centre in Paris. As an
influence on the English speaking world of street performers, it is in a class of its own. Sure, there are nicer places to
work. Sure, there are legendary festivals that we all dream of playing, but Covent Garden is worked by street performers
nearly every day of the year. Many of these performers make the majority of their money working nowhere else. And
likewise, many of them have been performing at Covent Garden regularly for 10 years or more.
The system of deciding who gets to perform has been through endless discussion. Street performing is illegal in
London. Covent Garden is an exception to that rule in that the Market Association pays a fee to the city government for
the license to allow street performing. Market management requires that every performer must have the liability
insurance and must pass an audition. The real purpose of the issuing permits is so they can be taken away if the
performer ends up being a nuisance by being dangerous to the public or by being offensive.
If you want to watch street shows, learn a lot about the art, and possibly have a go at trying what may be the best
training ground in the world for street performers, then come to London and have a look.

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO:
White House goes green with solar panels
Solar panels will be installed on the White House roof a quarter of a century after they were removed by President Ronald
Reagan.
A mix of different panels will be fitted in spring 2011 to generate both hot water and renewable electricity.
The move will come as a surprise to many green campaigners after the White House apparently rejected a recent request
by environmentalists to install the technology.
It will be the first time since 1986 that solar panels have sat on the White House, since Reagan removed a system
installed by his predecessor Jimmy Carter. In 1979 Carter held a conference on the roof, showing off the 32 panels and
his desire to reduce the US’s dependence on oil.
The return of solar at the White House follows other symbolic green efforts since Obama took power, including Michelle
Obama’s creation of an organic vegetable garden in the White House grounds last year.
Green campaigners have been pressing the president to reinstate solar at the White House. They have been driving
around the US in a biodiesel-powered van with one of the original panels installed by Carter.
The campaigners visited the White House in September and made a symbolic demand for the old panel to be reinstalled
on the roof. But the request was rejected and no plans for future solar panels were given.
Bill McKibben, who led the campaign, welcomed Obama’s decision to fit new panels: “Solar panels on one house, even
this house, won’t save the climate, of course. But they’re a powerful symbol to the whole nation about where the future
lies.”
To mark last month’s 10/10/10 day of mass participation climate events around the world, the president of the Maldives
also decided to use solar energy. Mohamed Nasheed, whose low-lying island country is at risk from rising sea levels
caused by global warming, has installed 50 panels on his presidential home.

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO:
SHERLOCK HOLMES RETURNS
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes because he spent too much time writing the stories. Now, 80 years
after the author's death, Britain's most famous detective is being brought back to life with a new novel by Anthony
Horowitz.
The character of Sherlock Holmes was originally created by the Scottish writer Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote four novels
and more than 50 short stories about Holmes. After his death, his son Adrian wrote several stories about the famous
Victorian detective, but critics say he was never that popular.
But it's the first time that the Arthur Conan Doyle Society has officially asked an author to write a new novel. His name is
Anthony Horowitz and is best known for his Alex Rider children's series. So was he worried by the challenge?
Anthony Horowitz:
"Well obviously, I was worried to a certain extent and you are dealing with probably the most iconic detective in the whole
history of literature. And the one thing I didn't want to do was to disappoint those really devout fans, the sort of Sherlock
Holmes Society and people who love these books.
But to be honest with you, I actually found it fairly easy to write because I have loved those books since I was 16 years
old, I've read them two or three times during the course of my lifetime - in fact, my whole life as a writer of crime fiction
myself was, to a certain extent, inspired by Doyle and I find the book not so scary as I thought it might be."
Anthony Horowitz says he's a devoted fan and aims to produce a first rate mystery for a modern audience.

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO:
IMMIGRATION
In the past, many people left Spain in search of work and a better life. After World War II, Europe collapsed and
some countries suffered the consequences of the long conflict. Many of their towns and cities were destroyed.
When they started to rebuild them, they needed a lot of extra working hands, and many Spanish people left to
work in construction. These Spaniards were looking for better working conditions and a better standard of
living. Other Europeans welcomed them because they needed workers.
Now things have changed. Spain is a developed country and Spaniards don’t have to leave to find good
employment. People now immigrate to Spain. We need immigrants to do some types of work.
Many people from developing countries and Eastern European countries are coming to Spain to look for jobs
and a standard of living they can’t find in their countries. Before, Spaniards were attracted by the richness and
prosperity of countries such as Germany, France, Britain, Belgium, etc., but now citizens from abroad are
attracted to the economic and social conditions we enjoy in our country.
Many Spanish people welcome foreign workers. They believe they are helping us in the jobs we don’t want to
do. However, others disagree and don’t want immigrants to remain in Spain. For this reason, Spanish
authorities are creating legislation to defend immigrants’ rights.
The fact that foreign people come to our country to work has its advantages and disadvantages. However, we
have to consider that once we immigrated to other countries and now people are immigrating to Spain. We
have to make every possible effort to help them integrate into our society because immigration is an
unstoppable phenomenon.

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO:
RIVER RAFTING
High adventure sports are becoming very popular among young people. These sports offer them the chance to
relax from the tension of daily life in cities and towns. These activities are not only sports but also social events
to have fun with friends and meet new people with similar tastes.
River rafting is one high adventure sport. Before trying it, you should take some things into consideration.
River rafting consists in riding an inflatable rubber boat down a violent river with the help of a paddle. Beginners
should not try this sport by themselves. They should follow the instructions of an expert guide who will lead
them down even the most raging rivers safely.
If you want to go river rafting, choose a good company which offers different levels of rafting from beginner to
experienced. At first, you will go down a river that moves slowly and has only a few rocks. This level mixes both
sport and nature, allowing you to enjoy the scenery as you float down the river. As you go more often, you can
try a faster river with more powerful waves and more rocks. As you go more often, you will feel more secure
about the risks you are taking. It is always very important to wear the special equipment for this outdoor
activity.
If you are a risk-taker, in good shape and know how to react in difficult situations, river rafting is an ideal sport
for you to spend a good weekend with friends or new people. Always raft safely and with other people in case
you have an accident. The chances of falling overboard are high.

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO:
SHOPPING CENTRES
People in the western world spend a lot of time in shopping centres.
Shopping centres are consumer paradises. They are climate-controlled, with wide arcades, fountains, plants and
escalators.
Every type of shop can be found and, for the hungry shoppers who often drive long distances, fast-food shops are
available. Even exquisite restaurants have opened in shopping centres.
Of course, no shopping centre today is complete without a cinema, showing several films simultaneously.
Cinemas at shopping centres were initially to keep youngsters busy while their parents went shopping. In the
past, some shopping centres did not show adult films for this reason.
Gradually, the shopping centre became the place for family meetings, with or without shopping. Families go there
just to spend time together away from home.

I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO Artist hides gift for gallery visitors A stream of art lovers has poured into an art gallery in Milton Keynes in the UK, spending hours studying the new exhibits intently. The Swiss artists Silvia Bächli and Eric Hattan must be surprised at the success of their latest exhibition. Only the fact that the visitors are looking just as intently at light fittings, skirting boards and window sills gives the game away. “No, nobody has found it yet,” Katharine Sorensen, the gallery’s communications director, said. She has the slightly weary air of a woman who has spent many days doing interviews with journalists from all over the world. This is all since the news spread that local artist Tomas Georgeson had hidden a signed cheque for $12,000 somewhere in the gallery. “We’ve had hundreds of people looking everywhere, and obviously we’ve all had a look, but nobody has seen it. If,” she added darkly, “it is actually there to find.” The gallery insists that far from being its own publicity stunt, it knew nothing about the cheque until it heard about it from the BBC last month. Georgeson is best known as a painter whose portrait of his father was included in a 2011 National Portrait Gallery exhibition in London. He knows the 300-metre-square Milton Keynes Gallery well because he has previously worked there as a volunteer. He said that he had hidden the cheque “as something positive in a town eager to establish itself as a cultural destination”. Assuming the cheque does exist and nobody finds it, the artist has said he will retrieve it on 1 March. Meanwhile the gallery has had to bring in extra staff to guard the displays, although Georgeson said it was not hidden “on or around” any of the works of art, and asked visitors to take great care not to cause any damage. “We have definitely seen more people in,” Sorensen said, with a tiny sigh. “Which is great – obviously.” Original article by Maev Kennedy, rewritten by Janet Hardy-Gould. 1. I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO Adeline Virginia Woolf (25 January 1882 – 28 March 1941) was an English writer, and one of the foremost * modernists of the twentieth century. Woolf was educated by her parents in their literate and well-connected home at 22 Hyde Park Gate, Kensington. Her parents had each been married previously and been widowed*, and, consequently, the house contained the children of three marriages. According to Woolf's memoirs, her most vivid childhood memories were not of London but of St. Ives in Cornwall, where the family spent every summer until 1895. The sudden death of her mother in 1895, when Virginia was 13, and that of her half-sister Stella two years later, led to the first of Virginia's several nervous breakdowns*. The death of her father in 1904 provoked her most alarming collapse. Virginia married writer Leonard Woolf on the 10th August, 1912. She began writing professionally in 1900. During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society. Her most famous works include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928), and the book-length essay A Room o One's Own (1929), with its famous dictum, "A woman must have money and a room of herf own if she is to write fiction." After completing the manuscript of her last novel, Be ween the Acts, Woolf fell into a depression similar to thatt which she had earlier experienced. On 28 March 1941, Woolf put on her overcoat*, filled its pockets with stones, and walked into the River Ouse near her home and drowned* herself. Woolf's body was not found until 18 April 1941. Her husband buried her cremated remains under an elm in the garden of Monk's House, their home in Rodmell, Sussex. I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO THE HISTORY OF MARVEL COMICS Marvel Comics is home to many of the most well-known and most popular comic book characters of all time. Today they are a part of the mega-corporation known as Marvel Entertainment, which has massive worldwide revenues and influence. It was a long journey for Marvel comic books to reach their dominant market position, featuring some down periods as well as others of explosive popularity and innovation. The Beginning of Marvel Comics Marvel Comics, then known as Timely Comics, was originally founded in 1939. It introduced several superhero characters such as the Human Torch. These characters were successful and gained popularity throughout the United States. With the arrival of World War II, Timely introduced what would become a mega-hit, Captain America. He and other Timely heroes of this time often confronted Nazis, with Captain America once even appearing on a front cover punching Adolf Hitler! This was the Golden Age of comics, with DC Comics’ Superman and Batman leading the way. Stan Lee was briefly the editor until interrupted by his service in World War II, after which he returned and served for several more decades. The Downturn After World War II however, interests and styles changed. The costumed superheroes that were popular were steadily declining while other themes were emerging. Fear of other threats like nuclear war and Communism appeared. During the 1950s Timely became known as Atlas Comics. Stan Lee now had his heroes fighting Communists instead of Nazis. Resurrection In the 60s, superheroes began to reappear on the comic book scene. The Silver Age featured bright, exciting new artwork and creative storylines. The superheroes of old were transformed into new versions of themselves, with more personal and emotional stories and backgrounds. Comic books surged in popularity and Marvel Comic books emerged from the ashes. Stan Lee and his artist, Jack Kirby, introduced the Fantastic Four (including a new Human Torch) in 1961, following a path paved by DC Comics and their own superheroes. Spiderman, the Hulk, X-Men and Iron Man were all created in subsequent years and would go on to great critical acclaim and long-lasting popularity. Captain America, too, was revived, acting as a link between the two eras. Lee gave up editing in the 1970s and became only the publisher. In recent years, Marvel comics have received an extra boost in popularity due to the success of blockbuster films like Spiderman and the Avengers. And Stan Lee makes a brief appearance in every single one. I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO Jane Austen was born on 16th December 1775 at Steventon rectory. After a few months at home, her mother placed her with Elizabeth Littlewood, a woman living nearby. Elizabeth nursed and raised Austen for a year or eighteen months. By December 1786, Jane and Cassandra had returned home because the Austens could not afford to send both of their daughters to school. After returning from school in 1786, Austen "never again lived anywhere beyond the bounds of her immediate family environment", stated one of her biographer. Austen acquired the rest of her education by reading books, guided by her father, George, and her brothers James and Henry. George Austen apparently gave his daughters unfettered access to his large and varied library, was tolerant of Austen's experiments in writing, and provided both sisters with expensive paper and other materials for their writing and drawing. According to Park Honan, a biographer of Jane Austen, life in the Austen home was lived in "an open, amused, easy intellectual atmosphere". Early in 1816, Jane Austen began to feel unwell. She ignored her illness at first and continued to work and to participate in the usual round of family activities. By the middle of that year, her decline was obvious to Austen and to her family, and Austen's physical condition began a long, slow, and irregular deterioration culminating in her death the following year. After Austen's death, Cassandra and Henry Austen arranged with Murray for the publication of Pe suasion and Nor hanger Abbey as a set in December 1817. Henry Austen contributed a Biographical Note which for the first time identified his sister as the author of the novels. r t Boarding school: internado unfettered: sin cadenas, sin grilletes. I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO BUSKING IN COVENT GARDEN Busking is a part of British culture and has been since the days of the travelling minstrel, a medieval entertainer who travelled from place to place, especially to sing and recite poetry. For every famous pop singer or band you may have heard of, there are thousands of street performers and buskers who play their art on the streets, and in the pubs, markets and squares of Britain. Covent Garden is just one of these places. The written history of street performers at Covent Garden goes back to the 1600s, but the scene in its current state dates from the late 1970s, when the covered fruit and vegetable market underwent its transformation into a tourist site. As a regularly worked busking pitch, its only rival world-wide would have to be the Pompidou Centre in Paris. As an influence on the English speaking world of street performers, it is in a class of its own. Sure, there are nicer places to work. Sure, there are legendary festivals that we all dream of playing, but Covent Garden is worked by street performers nearly every day of the year. Many of these performers make the majority of their money working nowhere else. And likewise, many of them have been performing at Covent Garden regularly for 10 years or more. The system of deciding who gets to perform has been through endless discussion. Street performing is illegal in London. Covent Garden is an exception to that rule in that the Market Association pays a fee to the city government for the license to allow street performing. Market management requires that every performer must have the liability insurance and must pass an audition. The real purpose of the issuing permits is so they can be taken away if the performer ends up being a nuisance by being dangerous to the public or by being offensive. If you want to watch street shows, learn a lot about the art, and possibly have a go at trying what may be the best training ground in the world for street performers, then come to London and have a look. I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO: White House goes green with solar panels Solar panels will be installed on the White House roof a quarter of a century after they were removed by President Ronald Reagan. A mix of different panels will be fitted in spring 2011 to generate both hot water and renewable electricity. The move will come as a surprise to many green campaigners after the White House apparently rejected a recent request by environmentalists to install the technology. It will be the first time since 1986 that solar panels have sat on the White House, since Reagan removed a system installed by his predecessor Jimmy Carter. In 1979 Carter held a conference on the roof, showing off the 32 panels and his desire to reduce the US’s dependence on oil. The return of solar at the White House follows other symbolic green efforts since Obama took power, including Michelle Obama’s creation of an organic vegetable garden in the White House grounds last year. Green campaigners have been pressing the president to reinstate solar at the White House. They have been driving around the US in a biodiesel-powered van with one of the original panels installed by Carter. The campaigners visited the White House in September and made a symbolic demand for the old panel to be reinstalled on the roof. But the request was rejected and no plans for future solar panels were given. Bill McKibben, who led the campaign, welcomed Obama’s decision to fit new panels: “Solar panels on one house, even this house, won’t save the climate, of course. But they’re a powerful symbol to the whole nation about where the future lies.” To mark last month’s 10/10/10 day of mass participation climate events around the world, the president of the Maldives also decided to use solar energy. Mohamed Nasheed, whose low-lying island country is at risk from rising sea levels caused by global warming, has installed 50 panels on his presidential home. After his death, his son Adrian wrote several stories about the famous Victorian detective, but critics say he was never that popular. But it's the first time that the Arthur Conan Doyle Society has officially asked an author to write a new novel. His name is Anthony Horowitz and is best known for his Alex Rider children's series. So was he worried by the challenge? Anthony Horowitz: "Well obviously, I was worried to a certain extent and you are dealing with probably the most iconic detective in the whole history of literature. And the one thing I didn't want to do was to disappoint those really devout fans, the sort of Sherlock Holmes Society and people who love these books. But to be honest with you, I actually found it fairly easy to write because I have loved those books since I was 16 years old, I've read them two or three times during the course of my lifetime - in fact, my whole life as a writer of crime fiction myself was, to a certain extent, inspired by Doyle and I find the book not so scary as I thought it might be." Anthony Horowitz says he's a devoted fan and aims to produce a first rate mystery for a modern audience. Sunita Nahar, BBC News 1. Contesta las preguntas con la información del texto. (2 puntos) A. I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO: IMMIGRATION In the past, many people left Spain in search of work and a better life. After World War II, Europe collapsed and some countries suffered the consequences of the long conflict. Many of their towns and cities were destroyed. When they started to rebuild them, they needed a lot of extra working hands, and many Spanish people left to work in construction. These Spaniards were looking for better working conditions and a better standard of living. Other Europeans welcomed them because they needed workers. Now things have changed. Spain is a developed country and Spaniards don’t have to leave to find good employment. People now immigrate to Spain. We need immigrants to do some types of work. Many people from developing countries and Eastern European countries are coming to Spain to look for jobs and a standard of living they can’t find in their countries. Before, Spaniards were attracted by the richness and prosperity of countries such as Germany, France, Britain, Belgium, etc., but now citizens from abroad are attracted to the economic and social conditions we enjoy in our country. Many Spanish people welcome foreign workers. They believe they are helping us in the jobs we don’t want to do. However, others disagree and don’t want immigrants to remain in Spain. For this reason, Spanish authorities are creating legislation to defend immigrants’ rights. The fact that foreign people come to our country to work has its advantages and disadvantages. However, we have to consider that once we immigrated to other countries and now people are immigrating to Spain. We have to make every possible effort to help them integrate into our society because immigration is an unstoppable phenomenon. 1.- Contesta las preguntas con la información del texto. (2 puntos) A. I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO: RIVER RAFTING High adventure sports are becoming very popular among young people. These sports offer them the chance to relax from the tension of daily life in cities and towns. These activities are not only sports but also social events to have fun with friends and meet new people with similar tastes. River rafting is one high adventure sport. Before trying it, you should take some things into consideration. River rafting consists in riding an inflatable rubber boat down a violent river with the help of a paddle. Beginners should not try this sport by themselves. They should follow the instructions of an expert guide who will lead them down even the most raging rivers safely. If you want to go river rafting, choose a good company which offers different levels of rafting from beginner to experienced. At first, you will go down a river that moves slowly and has only a few rocks. This level mixes both sport and nature, allowing you to enjoy the scenery as you float down the river. As you go more often, you can try a faster river with more powerful waves and more rocks. As you go more often, you will feel more secure about the risks you are taking. It is always very important to wear the special equipment for this outdoor activity. If you are a risk-taker, in good shape and know how to react in difficult situations, river rafting is an ideal sport for you to spend a good weekend with friends or new people. Always raft safely and with other people in case you have an accident. The chances of falling overboard are high. 1. Contesta las preguntas con la información del texto. (2 puntos) A. I. COMPRENSIÓN DE UN TEXTO: SHOPPING CENTRES People in the western world spend a lot of time in shopping centres. Shopping centres are consumer paradises. They are climate-controlled, with wide arcades, fountains, plants and escalators. Every type of shop can be found and, for the hungry shoppers who often drive long distances, fast-food shops are available. Even exquisite restaurants have opened in shopping centres. Of course, no shopping centre today is complete without a cinema, showing several films simultaneously. Cinemas at shopping centres were initially to keep youngsters busy while their parents went shopping. In the past, some shopping centres did not show adult films for this reason. Gradually, the shopping centre became the place for family meetings, with or without shopping. Families go there just to spend time together away from home. 1.
