New York City By: Courtney Grace
City of Tomorrow The Great Depression:(1930s) World wide economic downturn starting in 1929 Historians date it off the day the stock markets crashed on Oct. 29 1929 International trade plunged by half to two-thirds, as did personal income, tax revenue, prices and profits Heavy industry plunged Those who had no place to live ended up living in Hovervills Construction: mostly stopped Farms: and rural areas suffered because crop prices dropped about 60% Mining and lodging hurt the most from this depression The depression ended at different times depending on the country Most countries had relief programs set up to support them through this rough time
City of Tomorrow James J. Walker: Mayor of New York City 1925-1932 He used to walk into his office and see a pile of mail, ask if there was any checks in there and if the reply was “no” he would throw the mail off his desk. He had many affairs with ‘Chorus Girls’ and finally left his wife for a showgirl, Betty Compton He won re-election 1929 He was denounced by Hayes for immortality on a personal account and political account
City of Tomorrow Robert Moses: Civil servant Built the first state park system and the first system of state highways His works remain extremely controversial His career is summed up by his sayings "cities are for traffic" and "if the ends don't justify the means, what does?".
City of Tomorrow Harlem and the Riots: 1st race riot of 1935 All started because of a rumor about a teenager shoplifter who was beat 3 people died, hundreds were injured and approximately 2 million dollars worth of damage was done to the properties Some stores posted signs that read "COLORED STORE" or "COLORED HELP EMPLOYED HERE"
Sunshine and Shadow The Panic of 1873: Was the start of the Depression The bankruptcy of the Philadelphia banking firm An outbreak of equine influenza in 1872 had a pervasive effect on the economy The Vienna stock exchange crash Price of silver depressed Closed the stock exchange
Sunshine and Shadow The Panic of 1873 cont.. Homeless population grew. Police stations opened up there doors for people to stay Protests rallied with a series of demands Tons of people went without jobs. Without jobs no one had any money. Without any money people could not buy anything and that cause many businesses to close The Brooklyn tower was completed Set the stage of one of the most traumatic transitions for historic times Wall street Banker- John Morgan who master mined the re birth of America. He wanted order to cure this depression. He believed in rules no matter the chaos.
Sunshine and Shadow The Brooklyn Bridge: Built at the harbor to show everyone the old world and the new world Electricity was added to the bridge 5 days before the opening days Marks the beginning of the ‘vertical city’ because of the steel May 24, 1883 known as the ‘peoples day’ is the day the bridge opened. It was seen as an ‘anit-Irish’ day
A Merger That Puts New York On Top “New York, the unrivaled capital of the old American national industrial economy, will dominate the new American global information economy “ It is up the the west coast to make this decision To have successful city, was to have a successful leader in order to create ways to dominate the economy Two examples: the building of the Erie Canal (New York gained control of the exports of the U.S.) and “Triangle Trade” (allowed New York to control the cotton trade between the South and England) AOL has what New York needs AOL-Time Warner merger for rival media and Internet companies Mark Clough believes, “it will only be a matter of time before New York will end, once and for all, the debate about which city will emerge as the ‘capital of the next American century’."
The City in the Land of the Dollar The cities in the United States are known because each has its distinctive look There look it known to be because of: “their history of rapid growth, the predominance of business rather than government, American cities are “free for alls” with mismatch color schemes and shapes. Some small and some large or even some with large parking lots and others with parking garages the cultural ideal of the private house, and the relentless rush of the automobile.” American cities have long streets and in the downtown region have tall commercial buildings set apart from neighborhoods And on the other hand, Paris, has buildings in uniform color and ‘scaled focused upon public squares and monument’
The City In The Land of The Dollar Chicago: The fastest growing city in the United States and best known for the raw energy “Chicago as a city of factories, granaries, and slaughterhouses that grew rapidly thanks to its location at the center of the Great Lakes and the nation’s railroad network” Its means were to be given the image of European capital, Paris.
