3. Faculties The Academy is divided into 4 Faculties, each led by an Assistant Principal. Faculties have responsibility for the Academic Achievement and Welfare of each student assigned to the faculty. Faculties provide a sense of belonging to a smaller unit which overcomes the concerns some students have when moving to a large secondary school. Year groups are divided into tutor groups and are assigned a Faculty Tutor who will meet with the tutor group each day and monitor student progress and behaviour closely, liaising with parents as appropriate. Each Faculty Tutor is lead by a Subject Coordinator who has overall responsibility of the academic and pastoral welfare of all students in their faculty. Healthy competition between faculties will encourage teamwork and a sense of pride in achieving excellence in Sport, Enterprise, Academic Achievement, Attendance and contribution to the success of the Academy. The faculties are made up of the following staff structure and colour scheme: Creative ArtsAssistant Principal English & Media Coordinator - Creative Arts Coordinator Science & TechnologyAssistant PrincipalScience Coordinator - Technology Coordinator Business & EnterpriseAssistant PrincipalMathematics Coordinator - Business & ICT Coordinator World & Citizenship StudiesAssistant PrincipalHumanities Coordinator - PE Coordinator - MFL Coordinator Each student will wear a tie with the corresponding colour of the Faculty they are assigned to.

7. Chinese Arts at Harris Academy South Norwood The Modern Foreign Languages Department invited a group of Chinese artists to visit the Academy to give a work shop about the Mid–Autumn Festival on 12th of October. They demonstrated a range of activities from Lion Dancing, Martial Arts, Drumming, Ribbon Dancing and some Chinese games. Our Year 9 students really enjoyed the event. Here's what two of our students had to say about the day: “Last week Thursday our Mandarin class had a chance to experience Lion Dancing. A group of professional dancers came into give us some lessons on the topic. We watched some of the people perform the lion dance gracefully with delicacy. My favorite one was the Chinese dances with the handkerchiefs. I deeply enjoyed the day (by Indya Phillips)” “I like the last Mandarin lesson because we were able to have the pleasure of being shown the things that Chinese people do. We learnt the way of the Chinese and how to do their dance. It was also a practical lesson we could show off our talent to the talented performers. We soon learnt some new playground games and learnt some martial arts. (by Terrence Dufeal)”
