To cope with dynamic environments, Internet of Things (IoT) applications are expected to autonomously discover and interact with services at runtime in pursuit of design or user-specified goals. On the one hand, various paradigms and technologies are available to program goal-driven autonomous software agents, and on the other hand hypermedia-driven environments are central to the development of robust machine-to-machine applications. However, existing approaches for the development of hypermedia-driven environments fall short of meeting the needs of autonomous agents: they either severely restrict the agents’ autonomy, or their topological structure is either fragmented or inefficient to navigate at scale. In this paper, we explore the use of socio-technical networks, that is networks of people and things interrelated in a meaningful manner via typed relations, as an overlay for enhancing hypermedia-driven interaction in IoT environments. We present a proof of concept and discuss several classes of applications in which this model could prove useful.

This paper provides a Web of Things use case from a personalized load forecasting service to a gamied demand response program. Combining real-world measuring applications with web-based applications opens new opportunities to the smart grid. For this purpose, we propose a Web of Things framework for a novel load forecasting process at the appliance level. Firstly, we illustrate the concept design of the Web of Things framework consisting of the sensing infrastructure, the activity recognition and the load forecasting modules. Secondly, we show how we guarantee the modularity and flexibility for implementing all the three modules in a web- based manner. On top of our infrastructure, we propose an extended Web of Things use case by integrating our load forecasting approach into a demand response concept.

A component based architecture for the Web of Things

A component based architecture for the Web of Things

A component based architecture for the Web of Things

Although there are many smart devices and networked embedded object applications usingWorld WideWeb technologies, it is still a big step to go towards a true Web of Things. It is e.g. difficult to build ubiquitous WoT applications that work in and accross multiple environments. Approaches which aggregate WoT ressources by centralizing all the resource information, have problems: total dependency on external infrasture, lack of private WoT management, inflexible communication patterns and limited dynamic ressource discovery and mapping. To solve these problems, we propose uBox, a localWoT platform which can be a stand-alone server to make your WoT environment, with interfaces to connect the other local WoT platforms. This way, which we call uBoXing, we can create World Wide WoT platform with a distributed architecture. This paper describes the concept of a distributed resource management architecture, and how we implement the concept into software. Also, we will discuss the platform with the example application in SmartTecO environment.

Independent of the source of data, the integration of event streams into an Enterprise Architecture gets more and more important in the world of sensors, social media streams and Internet of Things. Events have to be accepted quickly and reliably, they have to be distributed and analysed, often with many consumers or systems interested in all or part of the events. Dependent on the size and quantity of such events, this can quickly be in the range of Big Data. How can we efficiently collect and transmit these events? How can we make sure that we can always report over historical events? How can these new events be integrated into traditional infrastructure and application landscape? Starting with a product and technology neutral reference architecture, we will then present different solutions using Open Source frameworks and the Oracle Stack both for on premises as well as the cloud.

You want to implement an Internet of Things (IoT) solution and would like to know if it should be implemented in the cloud or on-premises. You are interested in the cloud offerings of vendors and what benefits they provide and if a similar solution would not be possible on-premises. This presentation deals with this and other questions. Starting from an vendor-independent reference architecture and corresponding design patterns, different cloud solutions from various vendors are compared and rated. Additionally it will be shown how such solution could be implemented on-premises and how a hybrid IoT solution could look like.

A couple of years ago, One Laptop Per Child embarked on a mission to "create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning". Today, this vision is achieved through the learning environment "Sugar" and the laptop "XO". This talk will start with an overview of OLPC's mission and the XO before focusing more on Sugar. This environment centered around "activities", a model in between document and application centric interfaces, features an interesting data model and data sharing capabilities. However, most of the data produced on the XO stays on the XO and is not accessible to the other devices. I will describe how Semantic Web technologies can be employed to further share and interconnect the data and give an overview of use-cases being implemented on top of "SemanticXO", the Semantic Web toolkit for Sugar.

Exploring Linked Data content through network analysis

Exploring Linked Data content through network analysis

RDF is increasingly being used to represent large amounts of data on the Web. Current query evaluation strategies for RDF are inspired by databases, assuming perfect answers on finite repositories. In this paper, we present a novel query method based on evolutionary computing, which allows us to handle uncertainty, incompleteness and unsatisfiability, and deal with large datasets, all within a single conceptual framework. Our technique supports approximate answers with anytime behaviour. We present initial results and analyse next steps for improvement.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.
