  1. Introduction to Social Media in general and the importance for businesses and brands to proactively engage with their customers.
  2. Wer-kennt-wen : is one of the most popular social networking website in Germany. It is by an invitation-only social networking website and provides blog, chat, and guestbook facilities. StudiVZ : StudiVZ is the biggest social networking site in Germany. (Still?) It is also popular in German-speaking countries like Switzerland and Austria. This site works as a student directory in particular for college and university students in Europe allowing students to maintain a personal page that contains their personal information like name, age, study subjects, interests, courses and group memberships (within StudiVZ). Xing, (formally known as openBC/Open Business Club) is a professional networking tool popular in Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France. Xing is similar to LinkedIn.
  3. Hyves.nl : Hyves, pronounced hives (from beehives) is the largest social network in Netherlands, with many Dutch visitors and members. Hyves provides usual amenities of a social networking site, including profiles, blogs, photos, and so on. Netlog : Netlog is a Belgian social networking website specifically targeted at the European youth demographic. Netlog is pageview market leader in Belgium, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Romania and Turkey. In the Netherlands, Germany, France and Portugal, Netlog covers the second place. Netlog is very similar to FB. Users can create a profile, add friends, share music, post videos and wall updates and send messages.
  4. As most of the company’s users are below 18 years old, the company has a very strict privacy policies. It is for this reason for instance that Tuenti profiles don’t appear in any search engine results.
  5. First launched in Spain in 2006, it is now one of the leading dating sites in France, Italy, Spain and Latin America Online dating site: There are obviously no Business profiles. However for certain industry and businesses such as hotels, bars or restaurants, Badoo represents an important place to advertise their services.
  6. nasza-klasapl is one of the largest and most used social networking sites in Poland. As its name suggest, it primarily focuses on bringing together students and alumni. old friends reunion popular in  Russia  and other former Soviet Republics
  7. Its main targets are students and alumni. It allows its users to register from particular schools and graduation years, and so find old friends and classmates.
  8. Since 2009, the Social Media landscaped hass evolved significantly. This map, created by Vincenzo Cosenza shows the dominant social networks by country, based on traffic data gathered from Alexa and Google Trends for Websites. As you will see on the second map from 2011, the number of the main, dominant social netwiorks has dropped from 17 to 9 between June 2009 and June 2011.
  9. Facebook is now the ‘leader’ in 119 out of 134 countries.
