Notes on RAJAR and Ofcom.
RAJAR:
 RAJAR standsfor Radio Joint AudienceResearch
 They are the official body in charge of measuringradio audiencesin the UK.
 Jointly owned by the BBC and the Radiocentre on behalf of the commercial sector.
 RAJAR wasset up by the BBC and the RadioCentrein 1992 to measuretheir
audiencesusingthe same system. It replaced the BBC’sDaily Survey and
CommercialRadio’s JICRAR survey.
 RAJAR is a non-profitmakingorganisation.
 RAJAR datais the industry widecurrency for planning, buyingand selling
advertisingon CommercialRadio.
 RAJAR is owned and controlled by the industry itserves.
 RAJAR has a continuousprogrammeof innovation and developmentto meet its
market’s needs.
 The currentannualsampleis approximately 110,000respondentsaged 15+.
Participants are asked to keep a diary recordingtheir radio listening for a week.
 They are currently surveyingover 300 individualstationsthat are broadcasting
in the UK, 55 of these belong to the BBC.
 Only Ofcom-licenced stations can request to be measured by RAJAR
 The RAJAR isresponsible of setting the research specification, and overall quality
control.
 The currentresearch contracs were awarded in 2007 and wereextended for
another 3 years in 2011.

 Listeners per week: 40,000(adults)
 Hourslistened per listener: 7.2 hoursper week
 Total hourslistened: 290,000 hpw
 Wave105:
 Total listeners per week: 345,000(adults)
 Hourslistened per listener: 11.9 per week
 Total hourslistened: 4,689,000

Ofcom
• They regulate TV and radio actors, fixed line telecoms, mobile, postal services plus
the airwavesover winless devicesthat they operate.
• They also ensurepeoplewho watch TV and listen to the radio are protected from
harmfuland offensive material.
• Makesure peoplewho watch TV and a rangeof differentorganizationsprotects listen
to radio services.
• Deal with complaintsabout content on TV and radio shows.
• Investigate allegations against TV and Radio presentersgoing against any of the set
ruleand guidelines
• Founded on the 29thof December 2003 and arebased in London.
