We propose a tool to manage several sorts of relationships among RDF and RDFS. Our tool consists of three main functions: graphical editing of RDF contents, graphical editing of RDFS contents, and meta-model management facility. Metamodel management facility supports maintenance of relationship between RDF and RDFS contents. The above facilities are implemented based on plug-in system. We provide basic plug-in modules for consistency checking of RDFS classes and properties. The prototyping tool, called MR^3 (Meta-Model Management based on RDFs Revision Reflection), is implemented by Java language. Through the experiment of using MR^3, we show how MR^3 contributes the Semantic Web paradigm from the standpoint of RDFs contents management.

Libraries around the world have a long tradition of maintaining authority files to assure the consistent presentation and indexing of names. As library authority files have become available online, the authority data has become accessible -- and many have been published as Linked Open Data (LOD) -- but names in one library authority file typically had no link to corresponding records for persons and organizations in other library authority files. After a successful experiment in matching the Library of Congress/NACO authority file with the German National Library's authority file, an online system called the Virtual International Authority File was developed to facilitate sharing by ingesting, matching, and displaying the relations between records in multiple authority files. The Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) has grown from three source files in 2007 to more than two dozen files today. The system harvests authority records, enhances them with bibliographic information and brings them together into clusters when it is confident the records describe the same identity. Although the most visible part of VIAF is a HTML interface, the API beneath it supports a linked data view of VIAF with URIs representing the identities themselves, not just URIs for the clusters. It supports names for person, corporations, geographic entities, works, and expressions. With English, French, German, Spanish interfaces (and a Japanese in process), the system is used around the world, with over a million queries per day. Speaker Thomas Hickey is Chief Scientist at OCLC where he helped found OCLC Research. Current interests include metadata creation and editing systems, authority control, parallel systems for bibliographic processing, and information retrieval and display. In addition to implementing VIAF, his group looks into exploring Web access to metadata, identification of FRBR works and expressions in WorldCat, the algorithmic creation of authorities, and the characterization of collections. He has an undergraduate degree in Physics and a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science.

NISO Webinar: Experimenting with BIBFRAME: Reports from Early Adopters About the Webinar In May 2011, the Library of Congress officially launched a new modeling initiative, Bibliographic Framework Initiative, as a linked data alternative to MARC. The Library then announced in November 2012 the proposed model, called BIBFRAME. Since then, the library world is moving from mainly theorizing about the BIBFRAME model to attempts to implement practical experimentation and testing. This experimentation is iterative, and continues to shape the model so that it’s stable enough and broadly acceptable enough for adoption. In this webinar, several institutions will share their progress in experimenting with BIBFRAME within their library system. They will discuss the existing, developing, and planned projects happening at their institutions. Challenges and opportunities in exploring and implementing BIBFRAME in their institutions will be discussed as well. This chapter introduces the semantic modeling procedure, detailing its technical characteristics, possibilities and limitations. First, we present the languages that are used for semantic description. We present RDF, RDFS and OWL, describe their expressiveness in terms of describing Web Resources, and the abilities they provide in order to describe, query, administer and manage resources at a semantic layer. Next, we present the vocabularies that are used in order to provide common grounds in understanding and communicating ideas and concepts. The technologies, together with the vocabularies used, altogether comprise the modern landscape of Semantic Web/Linked Data applications and serve as the basis for maintaining, analyzing datasets and building applications on top of them.

The Web is a universal medium for information, data and knowledge exchange. The Semantic Web is an extension of the World Wide Web, ``in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation''\cite{semweb:lee}. RDF, together with SparQL, provide a powerful mechanism for describing and interchanging metadata on the web. This paper presents briefly the two concepts - RDF, SparQL - and three of the most popular frameworks (written in Java) that offer support for RDF: Jena, Sesame and JRDF.

Automating the Use of Web APIs through Lightweight Semantics

Sharing of content on the Web is already possible through other technologies such as FTP. It is therefore difficult to understand the need for a single Web-based format when already there are enough formats such as relational databases with annotated data that can be reused by other systems. Putting information into RDF files, makes it possible for computer programs to search, discover, pick up, collect, analyze and process information from the web. Using RDF, a Web browser should be able to reuse the data, requiring no additional work on the part of users, and here comes the tricky part to make easier for web programmers to work with RDF by using some RDF libraries.

The formulation of constraints and the validation of RDF data against these constraints is a common requirement and a much sought-after feature, particularly as this is taken for granted in the XML world. Recently, RDF validation as a research field gained speed due to shared needs of data practitioners from a variety of domains. For constraint formulation and RDF data validation, several languages exist or are currently developed. Yet, none of the languages is able to meet all requirements raised by data professionals. We have published a set of constraint types that are required by diverse stakeholders for data applications. We use these constraint types to gain a better understanding of the expressiveness of solutions, investigate the role that reasoning plays in practical data validation, and give directions for the further development of constraint languages. We introduce a validation framework that enables to consistently execute RDF-based constraint languages on RDF data and to formulate constraints of any type in a way that mappings from high-level constraint languages to an intermediate generic representation can be created straight-forwardly. The framework reduces the representation of constraints to the absolute minimum, is based on formal logics, and consists of a very simple conceptual model with a small lightweight vocabulary. We demonstrate that using another layer on top of SPARQL ensures consistency regarding validation results and enables constraint transformations for each constraint type across RDF-based constraint languages.
