2. POP VIDEOS
Even though there are common conventions of a
Pop music video, there is still a wide range of
videos, and like R&B music videos, the video
style will depend on the individual artist. Likewise,
it’s difficult to create a set list of codes and
conventions, because there’s such a wide range
of videos.
3. LOCATIONS
Locations in pop music videos have an extremely
wide variation, however, studios, and purpose
built sets feature heavily as a location. Many of
the locations depict large parties, as this is the
premise for many generic pop songs. It does,
however, depend on the artist, and sub genre of
pop that their songs fall into.
4. LIGHTING
Lighting for pop music videos is typically
bright, studio or artificial lighting. It does
depend on the mood of the song, but since
the majority of music videos are upbeat, the
lighting is generally bright.
5. FEMALE COSTUME AND
MAKEUP
Female pop artists tend to wear costumes, if their
video is set up to depict a storyline. Other than
that, they tend to wear bright and fashionable
clothes, to appeal to their typically younger fan
base. They tend to wear minimal, or natural
looking makeup, as this appeals more to their
audience.
6. MALE COSTUME
Male pop artists tend to wear trendy, fashionable
outfits, or costumes that fit their video. Male pop
artists generally have a young, female fan base,
and typically appear quite clean cut, in order to
appeal to them. They rarely appear in an over-sexualised
manner, and rarely appear shirt-less.
7. CAMERA WORK AND EDITING
Pop videos use a wide variety of shots, especially close
up’s of the artist, as it presents the artist to the audience.
Wide shots and panning shots are often used to show
elaborate sets, built for the video.
