2. Who is he?
• Storm Thorgerson was an english graphic designer who
worked with many large rock artists to create their album
cover art. Some of the artists he worked with included
Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.
• He was the designer of the infamous pink floyd cover:
Dark Side of the Moon
• He created the six stage approach to creating and
designing album covers.
3. STEP 1: The Brief
• The designer meets with the artist/band and goes through
the song concept – including the title and lyrics in order
to aid the design process. The designer will then come up
with ideas on colour schemes and style that is relevant to
the artists genre as well as the song itself.
4. STEP 2: Roughs
• The artist/band reunite and go through the ideas in an
attempt to come to an agreement. This is where word play
is used along with rough designs to come up with what is
planned to be the main idea.
5. STEP 3: Tests
• Based on the information the designer has received in the
previous two steps the designer will create some different
ideas generating what is known as a prototype. The
designer will then receive feedback so that any necessary
adaptations or minor changes can be made.
6.
7. STEP 4: The Shoot
• In this step if photos of the models or other props is
required a photo shoot will take place in the correct
location and many photos are taken at various angles in
various lightings to create the perfect look however the
lighting can be changed in post production.
8. STEP 5: The Editing
• Once the designer has the right photos for the artwork
post production will occur. Editing in post production can
include: adding filters and effects to give the photos the
look that the designers are looking for.
9. STEP 6: The Artwork
• The final image has been created and the title name and
artists name have been added to create the final cover and
should fit the brief as decided between the artist and
designer and the artwork is handed back to the artist to
use.
