1. EPHESIANS

2. A. TO WHOM ADDRESSED Ephesus, located on the western coast of Asia Minor, was one of the great cities of the Roman Empire. The city was idolatrous, especially noted for its worship of Diana. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians was written to his converts in this heathen environment.

3. B. THEME The Epistle to the Ephesians is a great exposition of a fundamental doctrine of Paul's preaching, the unity of all the universe in Christ, the unity of Jew and Gentile in His body. the church and God's purpose in that body for time and eternity.

4. The theme may be summarized as: The church is redeemed and united in Christ; therefore, the church should walk in unity and in newness of life, in the strength of the Lord and by the armor of God.

5. C. PURPOSE There were two dangers that threatened the assembly at Ephesus. One was a temptation to sink to heathen standards. The second was a lack of unity between Jew and Gentile. To offset the first danger, Paul set forth the holiness of the Christian's calling in contrast to their former sinful condition as heathens.

6. To guard against the second, he presented the Lord Jesus as making peace between Jew and Gentile by the blood of His cross and making of the twain a new body.

7. D. DATE The letter to the Ephesian saints was written during Paul's first imprisonment, 61-63 A.D.

10. 1. The Threefold Source of Our Salvation (1:1-8) Following a short salutation, Paul began to discuss the threefoldsourceof our salvation, the first being the predestination of the church (1:4-6). Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

11. Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, Eph 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

12. Individual man makes his choice by free will. The church, however, as a collective whole, is destined to salvation. We are adopted and through Christ, accepted into the church or Christ's body.

13. Second, we have redemption through the Son (1:7-12). Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Eph 1:8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Eph 1:9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

Eph 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: Eph 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

15. And third, we are sealed by the Spirit (1:13, 14). Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Eph 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

16. This is the earnest. a first payment-of the complete redemption which will be ours in the future.

17. 2. The Threefold Manifestation of God's Power (1:10-2:22) God's power was manifested in Christ through the resurrection, ascension, and exaltation (1:19-23). It is demonstrated in the individual through the spiritual resurrection, spiritual ascension, and the power to show forth good works and God's grace throughout eternity (2:1-10).

18. The power is manifested in the whole of humanity through the Gentiles, Jews, and the church (2:11-22). The Gentiles are no longer strangers to the covenant, but were made nigh by the blood of Christ. They now have equal access to God in the spiritual temple as the Jews. Out of these two groups, God has constructed a building without hands, whose chief cornerstone is Christ and whose foundation is the apostles and prophets. The stones are the individual Christians.

19. 3. A Threefold Statement Concerning Paul (Chapter 3) In chapter 3 Paul made three statements regarding his ministry, prayer, and praise.

20. 4. Threefold Exhortation to the Whole Church (4:1-5:21) Paul exhorted the assembly to unity (4:1-6), a new life (4:17-32), and a new walk (5:1-20).

21. 5. A Threefold Exhortation to the Family (5:21-6:9) In his admonition to the family, Paul covered the relationships of husbands and wives (5:21-33), parents and children (6:1-4), and masters and slaves (6:5-9).

22. 6. A Threefold Expression of Spiritual Life (6:10-24) Paul closed his epistle with three expressions of spiritual life. He first exhorted the saints to put on the whole armor of God for power. He then encouraged the assembly to prayer (6:18, 19) and peace (6:20-24).
